Is it me or is this evening’s Leicester card one of the most dire and uninspiring in a long time?
It seems to consist of serial no-hopers and unreliable donkeys – apologies to connections!!!!
July 23, 2008 at 14:02 #174405Jackpot meeting too, apparently.
July 23, 2008 at 14:06 #174407Good Lord – it is as well and with a £320k carry forward.
Methinks it will be carried over to somewhere else tomorrow.
July 23, 2008 at 15:28 #174429It doesn’t look quite as bad as the picture painted above. Two of the handicaps are 61-80 contests, with almost £7000 as top prize in one race, top weight of 80 in that and 79 in the previous race. Their are some interesting lightly raced performers in the fillies’ handicap , with the likes of bin Surror, Swinburn, Cole, Dunlop and Hills putting up contestants.
Disappointing turn-out of only 5 in the nursery handicap, but the top rated is 81, and there have been bigger fields for less prize money elsewhere.
Yes there’s a seller and a couple of run of the mill maidens, but since the majority of the thoroughbred population are moderate there have to be Class 5 and 6 events.

July 23, 2008 at 17:06 #174443Hi there folks, i agree and disagree with the topic. Doesn’t look that bad but neither that good. R Hannon’s 2yo Wilbury Star should take the first. And in the last, the horse hasn’t ran to what i was expecting of it, but Internationaldebut should be able to take the maiden stakes.
By the way folks, i have never known how to enter to win the jackpot and how do you win? Do you have to have every winner?
Thanks
July 23, 2008 at 17:14 #174446Quite simple really….All you have to do is pick the winner of first 6 races

It’s a totepool bet and you can have as many permutations as you like. Not sure about minimum unit (10p?)
Have a go and good luck!!
July 23, 2008 at 17:15 #174447Fair response Rob – perhaps I should have been clearer in my definition of dire and unspiring.
I was not referring to the grade of racing but more to the beasts taking part – nearly all of who have serious question marks or doubts about them.
With, now, 65 runners there is not, in my view, a single horse worth putting someone elses money on – yet alone any of mine!!
In the first those who have run have shown little ane the other half are debutants.
In the Nursery it is a case of which one will perform to their potential.
The seller – enough said – at least one of them will finally become a winner.
In the fourth none have any decent recent form
The fifth is the only one half approaching being anything like a potentially competitive heat.
And teh last is a classic "getting out" stakes.

Think The Jostler (8.25) is quite big at 16-1 and shall be having a nice e/w.

July 23, 2008 at 20:34 #174487What a stupid question asking if the Leicester card is dire and uninspiring.
I thought every Leicester flat card was dire and uninspiring.
Mind you it has seen Nashwan,Royal Athlete and My Way de Solzen over the years.
And also the first time Clare Balding ever went and saw the Belvoir Bar she thought she was in paradise.

July 23, 2008 at 20:59 #174498WAHAY! They both won in the end – 9/4 and 6/4. That’ll do nicely
July 23, 2008 at 22:23 #174510I won’t put it any stronger than this, but John Egan’s ride on Dzesmin seemed rather indecisive – the gelding was far more settled than can often be the case, but Egan didn’t seem to make his mind up quickly enough as to what side of the horse in front he wanted to send his charge about 1f – 1.5f out.
I think this was the difference between finishing in the frame and fifth rather than winning and fifth, but certainly Dzesmin was on better terms with himself than to finish just fifth on merit tonight.

Three comments.
1 – Leicester has actually seen its fair share of decent types because of the slight similarity to Newmarket for the (now) straight 7f with a dip and uphill climb. It’s also reasonably OK for Newmarket trainers to get to.
2 – If you think the flat at Leicester is dire, go to a jumps meeting (I am slightly more a jumps enthusiast, but not at my local!).
3 – Only people who know how to pronounce Belvoir are going to get that…

July 24, 2008 at 19:34 #174624One good thing which you do get at Leicester is the Tea Cake and Tea with butter and jam,
A real treat and well worth the money.
NH racing is quite good at Leicester but they need to do the following.
1 Have 3m hurdle races
2 Have a Satelite Leicestershire National over 3m5f
3 Have a valuable 2m handicap hurdle.
