Has there ever been a more disappointing bunch? I really thought Captain Chris, Wishful Thinking and Quito were going to be challenging for top honours this year. Bostons Angel and Wayward King have also let the form down

He was incredibly overated to begin with. Everybody seemed to fall in love with him because he jumped well and had won two weakish races around Cheltenham. He’s never been a fast horse and i couldn’t understand what he was ever considered a banker for the RSA.
February 1, 2012 at 21:48 #389387Time For Rupert can perhaps be forgiven as he may have been ‘ruined’ mentally or physically in the RSA as he gallantly kept going despite his lung infection.
But yes, they have been woeful. I think it shows how terrible it was to lose Tell Massini. In hindsight, he probably would have been the standout novice and may have shown us the mediocrity of the others very quickly.
February 1, 2012 at 23:06 #389391Time For Rupert was a very good novice. As TYF says, he had a lung infection and hasn’t been the same since.
Boston’s Angel didn’t run to even last year’s form earlier in the season. Possibly more to do with Jessie Harrington’s poor form at the time. Though BA never had the scope for improvement. Like the rest of the RSA field. They’re just good class handicappers.
Wishful Thinking was an excellent novice but sadly has breathing problems.
Wouldn’t surprise if Captain Chris either has a leg problem or needs to go right-handed these days. Always did go slightly right, but far more marked last week.
Finians Rainbow hasn’t done too badly. Looked the winner in at Ascot, Gerraghty looked to be taking it a bit easy until Somersby came up his inner. Even so, didn’t find much and might be best on a tight track.
Ghizao’s jumping and temperament look suspect, doesn’t stay 2 1/2m either.
Quito De La Roque has done reasonably well…
Noble Prince likewise, however he’s been handicapped by racing over the wrong trip and may yet prove himself.
There’s no denying last year’s novices have been disappointing, although most of the best ones have had excuses.
