Heard they told staff not to talk to anyone about the incident in hope it wouldn’t reach the papers, some despicable people in the betting industry.
Indeed.
I thought it odd that a man being mauled to death by dogs made the national news, yet another killed by his fellow human didn’t. The murder in Morden only made the local paper and the Racing Post- the main news channels, both on television and in print, completely ignored it.
Now why would the bookmakers want to keep this quiet, I wonder?
May 28, 2013 at 18:31 #441022Didn’t they offer money back or vouchers on all losing bets if Dawn Approach won the 2000 Guineas, or am I dreaming. Their website is awful and too cluttered.
I always drift back to good old Paddy Powers, so much clearer and user friendly.
Snap I am exactly the same PP where possible but if I have to use Ladbrokes I have to use Chrome now since the revamp the BET button doesn’t work on Firefox plus the balance screen is annoying as it does not update without changing the page.
Has anyone else also found that the forecast bets are sometimes missing for certain races.
Only Coral have had a worse website revamp than Ladbrokes.

Apparently the attack happened at about 8.30 but he wasnt found until about 10pm.
Be nice if this got a mention on The Morning Line.

The attack was at 8:30am and the body discovered at 10am, not pm.
There have been several attacks on bookmakers in south east London of late- one Paddy Power branch was robbed twice in the space of a month. Both incidents came at closing time. Another Paddy Power shop and a Hills both had attempted robberies as soon as they opened. A Stan James was robbed at half eight in the morning, too.
The trend appears to be that robbers are targeting shops either as they open or close, as there are fewer people around at that time. Perhaps if bookmakers opened and closed at more sensible times, such incidents wouldn’t occur. I remember when bookies were only open from 11:00 until 18:00; those days are long gone, thanks to the arrival of FOBTs.
By the way, did anybody else read the piece on the wretched FIXED odds betting terminals in the Grauniad the other day?
May 30, 2013 at 15:26 #441185Very pleased to say that a person has been detained in connection with the tragic death of my colleague in London.
RIP Andrew

As an employee of Lads-r-broke I can honestly say most of our shop staff couldn’t give a xxxx about their profits, not after one of or collegues was brutally murdered last Saturday, not only a victim of a vicious thug but also a victim of Ladbrokes policy of making staff single man as much as possible.
Beaten to death with a hammer when opening ALONE at 8.30am in Morden, south London his body lay on the counter floor out of sight until his cashier turned up at 10am.He had been with the company for over 20 years and leaves behind a disabled wife and a son with severe Autism.
From the start shop staff and the Union said single manning was dangerous (not to mention terrible customer service), and that sooner or later somebody would be killed but all Ladbrokes and their competitors care about are profits from FOBT machines which now account for around 60% of shop profit. All the major betting shop firms DON’T CARE ABOUT HORSES,DOGS AND FOOTBLL PUNTERS!!!! All they give **** about are those junkies pissing away all their money day in day out on Roulette and Blackjack etc.
An e-petiton is now on the Govt website calling for an end to single staffing in all betting shops. Can all who read this please log on and sign it and if possible let as many others as possible know about it.

I know you lot often get the hump with shop staff, but most of the time it’s not our fault,it’s the greedy immoral ***** at boardroom level!

July 2, 2013 at 07:16 #444620One of my local betting shop managers told me yesterday of an incident which happened last week.
A colleague of his was changing the football coupons when a customer attacked her, physically grabbing her and punching her. She had taken all the usual precautions of making sure that the coast was clear before leaving the counter area; her assailant was apparently watching from across the road and crossed over to attack her when he saw her emerge ftom the protected area. What had she done to merit this attack? Asked the customer to smoke his joint outside, not inside, the shop about half an hour earlier.
The incident took place at about ten to eleven at night, in a part of town which is deserted at that time of the evening. The question that needs to be asked is why is there any need for a betting shop in such a remote location to be open until eleven o’clock at night?

Under the law of the land no betting shop is permitted to remain open after 22.00. Something my employer (Ladbrokes) regulates very seriously. I am intrigued to know what the staff member was doing, being there with a door unlocked at 22.50
July 3, 2013 at 10:43 #444718The law must’ve changed since you last looked, Meerkat.
There are several bookmakers open until eleven o’clock and even midnight in both my particular London Borough and in central London. The shop at which this attack took place is open until eleven; the same firm has another branch about 300 yards away which remains open until midnight, seven days per week.

Honestly, it’s absolutely ridiculous.
Mike
July 3, 2013 at 12:55 #444726Not only is it ridiculous, Mike, but it is putting staff at greater risk for no reason other than FOBT-driven greed. Who is likely to come into a betting shop at that time of night, if not those who have either just left the pub and are therefore a bit more argumentative, or those looking for trouble?
And let’s not forget that one of the three licensing objectives of the Gambling Act 2005 is "protecting children and other vulnerable persons from being harmed or exploited by gambling." People under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs are classified as "vulnerable persons"; if the majority of people stumbling into betting shops late are night are either drunk or stoned (or both), surely the bookmakers are directly breaking one of the licensing objectives?
