    I have the opportunity to attend a meeting at Kyoto in October. This could be for the Shuka Sho G1 (or the day before).

    Having looked at the JRA website it seems you have buy ticket for popular meetings in advance, using a website in Japanese.

    Any hints / tips much appreciated 🙏.

    John Jenkins once had a chaser called Kyoto.

    Saw him fly round Newton Abbot under something like 12st7lb to win the Dimplex Tango Handicap Chase, the first race of the new NH season, once.

    That’s probably as relevant to this thread as my adult life-long love of sushi, but I thought I’d point it out anyway.

    That Kyoto finished third behind Badsworth Boy in the 1985 Champion Chase.

    I am hoping to visit Japan in the not too distant future, so your question was of interest Archipenko.

    From a quick internet search, I found this guide in English https://japanracing.jp/en/racing/go_racing/tour/pdf/guideline.pdf.

    I can’t offer much help unfortunately but I have been past it on the train and it is massive. There was no racing on when I went though.

    Japan is a fabulous country in general and you will have an absolute blast.

    I remember seeing a bit on TV about the Japan Cup . The crowd build up outside early , when gates open it’s like Olympic 100 metres with mad dash to get a spot for day .
    As well as the JRA circuit , there’s the NAR circuit with a lot of evening meetings under lights so you could double up .
    As for Kyoto I remember him , Iam sure John Francome rode him to significant winner once , maybe it was just 100 for season once , sure it’s something though . I recall he would go round few times a week early on in season . John Jenkins website has a great photo of him in full flight .

    @Marlingford

    Thanks for sharing!

    Using a combination of that guide and Apple Translate, I’ve managed to set up an account on the ticketing website. It seems as though tickets are released in batches on certain days so I’ve made a mental note to apply.

    Aiming for Saturday 14/10 as hopefully less demand than Shuka Sho day 😊.

    That sounds promising Archipenko. English is not prominent on the JRA site, and it was a bit daunting on first look!

    Hope you make it to the races, and please come back and tell us about your experience if so :-)

    Absolutely @Marlingford.

    I am also going to be in Hong Kong so will be attending Happy Valley 🇭🇰.

    Don’t miss Happy Valley, it’s awesome. Couldn’t be easier to get in either, just scan the same card you use for the metro and you’re in. Costs 10 HK$ which is about a pound.

    Absolutely loved Hong Kong in general, I am very jealous of your trip!

    I think there’s a racecourse in Macau too if you’ve got time and there’s a meeting on. It’s an easy day trip from HK on the ferry or by bus across the bridge that was built recently (which is a stunning piece of engineering in my opinion). No visa required.

    I did not go to the races there but it’s a nice day (or longer) trip in its own right anyway.

    25 years since I went to Happy Valley but they did have a system whereby if you turn up at the course in the days prior to racing , or the morning you could show your passport as a tourist and get a day member ticket rather than public enclosure . Will likely all be online now I suppose . A very good night out .

    I’ve applied for tickets to Kyoto Racecourse on both 14 / 15 October. Find out whether I’ve got them on 11 October 🤞🤞.

    Good luck Archipenko! Any non-Japanese speakers who manage to get as far as submitting an application should be given priority as a reward ;-)

    @Marlingford

    Ha ha, thanks. It was confirmed that I secured tickets for 14 October. Very excited!

    On a side note, I was at Happy Valley in HK yesterday and had the best time. That is a racecourse on steroids – the sheer scale of the thing 😳😳.

    The meeting was well attended, and there was a good atmosphere. But I still got up close to the horses in the parade ring and trackside.

    I would post pics, but I don’t know how 🤔.
