Started his 3YO campaign back in May when beaten 5L in the 2,000 Guineas over eight furlongs. A creditable effort on fast ground against four-time Group 1 winner, Kingman, and dual Derby winner, Australia.
The following month he was the only serious challenger to Australia at Epsom over twelve furlongs, and followed that with a decent fourth against his elders in the Eclipse over ten furlongs. He was never going to produce his best in what was a tactically run contest, but still fared best of those coming from behind.
He got due compensation at Doncaster in the St Leger over an extended fourteen furlongs, and after that gruelling effort finished fourth in a competitive renewal of the Arc from an outside draw.
Five races in six months.
Five Group 1s.
Four different trips.
Three classics – 2,000 Guineas / Derby / St Leger. He finished out of the first four on just one occasion. What a star!!
How would you campaign him next season?
October 5, 2014 at 15:54 #491583Start him at Royal Ascot in the Prince Of Wales. Then the King George again (but miss if rock hard). Then York for the International and finally the Arc.
October 5, 2014 at 18:55 #491602I said it today that he was the best 3yo 11/2m horse in Europe and he proved it.Had the Arc been run on very Soft ground he’d have won.A superb early bit of race riding from both Paul Hanagan and Andrea Atzeni got both their mounts a place ultimately.

He’ll get the best chance of soft ground in the early and late parts of the season, so I’d aim him at either the Tattersalls Gold Cup (could be a handy G1) or the Ganay, before maybe looking at the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud for his second start. They could then give him a break after the King George before going Irish Champion Stakes/Prix Foy and the Arc.
October 5, 2014 at 20:20 #491622If he had had a kinder draw, he might have finished closer to Trêve.
I’m really delighted by what he did today bearing in mind that he didn’t run on his favourite ground. He is definitely a great horse.October 5, 2014 at 22:38 #491630I think the world of Kingston Hill. Considering he hasn’t had his preferred soft ground, he’s ran some cracking races in defeat. I thought he was gonna get swallowed up in the closing stages of the Arc but he kept on resolutely to hold fourth place.
Next season, I’d campaign him in the Coronation Cup, King George, International and Arc.
October 5, 2014 at 22:46 #491632The Coronation Cup would be interesting, we know he handles Epsom, I suppose it could be ground dependant although he seems to run well enough on a fast surface.
Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
October 7, 2014 at 09:49 #491688Sorry for coming across so negatively on so many horses, but I see Kingston Hill as the jack of all trades and the master of none.
I think he will go winless next season unless he gets a real penalty kick in the Tatts Gold Cup.
October 7, 2014 at 12:05 #491691Would get 2 miles standing on his head. Send him over hurdles and straight for The Champion in March!
