The 8/11 seems to have disappeared now, along with the entire market for starting fav.
July 20, 2011 at 17:43 #365290i wonder will they ever give fallon another chance?he is down to ride at york on saturday, but im sure if he was asked on time he would have jumped at the chance to ride SNA.i cant understand how he cant pick up hardly any group one rides now.it is an insult to the man and his talent to see some of the donkeys he has to ride nowadays.id say it must be hard for him to motivate himself with the current situation.there is noboby better on the big day
July 20, 2011 at 19:10 #365301Surely Fallon is more trouble than he is worth. He always seems to be mixed up with controversy. Who needs that?
Strangely, he retains some supporters and lies about 4th in the jockeys championship. But as you say increasingly he is appearing at second rate venues like Leicester.
Good luck to him, but I think he needs to go at least a few months without getting into trouble before he is back on the A list.
July 20, 2011 at 21:34 #365311Is St Nicholas Abbey a non runner?
Drifting a fair bit on exchanges.Exactly what I started to think last night.
July 20, 2011 at 21:48 #365316Looking at the stats its been a while since a 3 year old has won the race but overall their record is superior.
Nathaniel is obviously thriving or you wouldn’t waste the entry fee. Any more rain would suit him more than any of the other runners and in receipt of 12lbs from his elders, he clearly represents the value.
I’m not sure how many Derby winners have run in the race as 4 year olds but Teenoso was the last to be successful 27 years ago. Last year the Workforce team were similarly bullish about his chances and Cape Blanco confirmed Dante form with him. He clearly is not a straighforward animal to train and therefore taking a short price about such horses does keep the bookmakers one step away from the workhouse. Rewilding has clearly improved from 3 to 4 and may have improved past him, especially if you take the form against So You Think at face value. St Nicholas Abbey won the Coronation which is usually one of the weakest group one races in the calendar beating an admirable racemare but one who has subsequently been soundly beaten by her own sex. Most disappointing of all is the size of the field, given the prize money and the lack of an outstanding runner. Ascot need to do something to reinstate it’s championship status as it is fast becoming just another Group One.
July 20, 2011 at 22:06 #365320Completely disagree with the last bit. Quality, not quantity. We’ve got 3 of the best 4 or 5 middle-distance horses in the Uk & Ireland lining up alongside one of the most exciting 3yos this season. Who is really missing that could’ve been lining up? So You Think? Midday? Crystal Capella?

Still the 2nd best all-aged 12f race in Europe, and by some way. Largest field this century was just 12 runners yet the roll of honour reads like a who’s who of racing.
3 multiple gp1 winners with £6m of earnings between them, and probably one of the highlights of an outstanding season; just what do you want?July 21, 2011 at 13:35 #365353Interesting that Joseph is "the best available on the day".I give up.Better than the best French jockeys? Better than the work lads in the yard? I give up. Any wonder Johnny left. What you say RiGitS to this? Giving away three lbs on rating to Moore and Dettori and Buick. Can SNA afford the luxury of an apprentice?Better not lose with an apprentice without his claime riding the horse.
SNA must be a certainty or else we are all crazy to have backed him. Any wonder he has been drifting.Would anyone have backed him if the jockeys had been announced a month ago.
Is Aidan going to return to NH training as he suggested a year ago? If the "lads" agreed to this it must have been an ultimatum.July 21, 2011 at 16:05 #365364Interesting that Joseph is "the best available on the day".I give up. Better than the work lads in the yard? I give up.
Am I mistaken – but doesn’t Jo ride him all the time anyways?! Making him his work lad?!

Someone said elsewhere that his pa must not really care about ‘St Nics’ prospects – or you could even take it as a positive – i.e they expect something special & it’s a gift!

It’s a lot to leave yourself that open to all sorts of mockery and at the mercy of the pocket talking critics – if you don’t have full faith in what is planned!
Either way all this talk of giving it to Murtagh seems odd and pointless to say the least!
That bridge is burnt!
The same as the one to KF now (it should be) I guess after what happened b4 the Derby.
How many chances can someone have to do the right thing?!!
I can see why some might have expected/hoped for Soumi to be on board – as he isn’t riding for his retainer on ‘Sano Di Pietro’ on saturday…
Anyways, one thing I thought that you’d have been happy with is the lack of BallyD pacemakers!!

P.s. Andy you’ve talked negative about why his chance of winning is somewhat knackered – could you tell me why you fancy ‘St Nic’ to win despite the commonly held & popular notion that he has it all to do?
July 21, 2011 at 16:41 #365367Reminds me of Paddy Mullins Lord have mercy on him and Dawn Run.If Ballydoyle thinks he is sure to win then they don’t take risks with an apprentice. But make doubly sure by putting the best jockey(Peslier or Mosse or Soumillon if available)on board.Saturdays betting will tell exactly what his chances are. Remember Tabor and Smith are big gamblers when they have the confidence of Aidan behind them. That is just my opinion.
July 21, 2011 at 16:45 #365368Look either the horse is already past the post or Aidan has chosen this hill to die on.Go figure.

Fair enough Andy!
I don’t follow the money of others… my preference is to go by my own judgment based on form and other things…
Look either the horse is already past the post or Aidan has chosen this hill to die on.Go figure.
I already have!!
(Well I’ve tried to!)

Are there form lines that suggest that there might not be as much between them as thought – or improvement to find?
Lines that run from York to Donny via Longchamps to Tokyo and back to Epsom?
Whether it works out or not…
It could either end in
or
but nothing is ever so bad for
The only thing left to decipher is who’ll be the first to:

Value, schmalue?
He hasn’t an earthly of winning the race, and has only the pacemaker to beat to recoup most of his entry fee.
The soft gp1 placing wouldn’t do his stud prospects any harm, either.July 22, 2011 at 15:27 #365442

Perfect ground, according to a couple of the jockeys in the 3rd, and even with an early dawdle, only 1.69 secs above standard suggests there’s no soft in it anywhere.
Great race; bring it on!July 22, 2011 at 21:47 #365459Hard to make sense of Andyod’s comments in relations to jockey bookings:
Look either the horse is already past the post or Aidan has chosen this hill to die on
????
Anybody who follows Irish racing knows Joseph can ride.
An the end of the day it’s a five runner race. If it’s a good clip, it’s just a matter of point and shoot. If it’s slow (unlikely with Debussy), then there will be a pre-determined plan. i.e. sit and wait or push up and make it.
The most baffling comment I’ve read though is this one:
Most disappointing of all is the size of the field, given the prize money and the lack of an outstanding runner
????
You have last year’s Derby and Arc winner, a champion 2yo and Coronation Cup winner, and a dual Group One from the Godolphin stable who happened to win the race of the season last time out all competeting against one another. And somebody out there is daft to make a comment like above. Please do tell, what ‘outstanding runner’ would you like to have seen here?
July 22, 2011 at 22:17 #365467You can get 8/11 for Workforce to start fav with paddy power- a good deal in my opinion . Also you could hedge by laying him on an exchange.
That was a good pick.

July 22, 2011 at 22:22 #365469I think this is a "watching" race as it is too tricky to call for me.
I’d have a small bet on Nathaniel at 7/1 to give me an interest (I’m not punting, though). He could improve enough to win and all the others are beatable. Workforce is a worthy fav (I don’t fancy St Nic as I think he is overrated and this could be too much – I actually see him as more of a stayer!) but his dismal effort in this race last year is a concern.
