Hahaha i remember sticking up for Long Run and getting stick for it. I smirk.
Well done mate
I backed Riverside each-way yesterday and was happy with his run, it maybe that Long Run wants Kempton or a sharp track.
Definitely happy with my each-way 5’s on imperial commander for the gold cup.
January 15, 2011 at 15:13 #336018I think it was merely a case of Kauto being too fresh early and generally not himself, and Long Run running and jumping out of his skin that levelled the playing field. Simple as. He’s NOT finished.
I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Kauto won the GC.
January 15, 2011 at 15:16 #336019Great run from Long Run. Kauto clearly in trouble a long way out, and for a moment that Nacarat might do it, but he showed again he doesn’t stay 3m in a top class race. Prob ran same race as last year.
And the other winner – the thieves!, who shortened Long Run from 7 to 9-2 right at the off.

.
I would, be very surprised.
If Nicholls gets Denman there, without the prep run like he had in the AON Chase last season, and Denman is in the fitness and form he showed this year in the Hennessy, he will finish ahead of Kauto Star, and he will go very close.

I will be astounded if Kauto wins the Gold Cup
Riverside Theatre looks interesting though! And Denman.
January 15, 2011 at 15:18 #336023Long Run reminds me of the kind of horse the novice buyer who goes to the sales and picks up because he’s the one with the shiny coat. Looks the part but isn’t.
I think people should face the fact he’s simply not that good. He had everything you could possibly think of in his favour last time out, was 100% fit and was backed accordinly but still ended up being outjumped and outpaced.
Considering the horse is merely a five year old I think that is very premature IMHO. He has been a talking horse that has yet to deliver, however to suggest a horse that has amassed career winnings of over £700k is not that good is complete twoddle.
For what its worth, I would love to see Riverside Theatre take his chance in this, he was very impressive last time out at Kempton, he didn’t beat much, but he looked a most improved horse.

Of course he could improve but he’d have to do so out of all recognition to even be a half decent threat to Kauto Star in the King George.
Your argument is pretty poor to be honest as he won almost all of his winnings in France against horses who would do well to win a handicap in the UK. In the UK he’s beat Tazbar and Joe Joe Star and got stuffed when it really matters. Fair enough he was giving a lot of weight to Little Josh who NTD has always rated very highly but the 2nd is no world beater which hardly gives the for the look of a what’s expected to win a King George.
You probably rate him higher than Nicky Henderson does and if Kauto Star hasn’t regressed I expect him to win doing handstands again.
Riverside Theatre is interesting but it’s not like Nicky to throw them into unknown territory at this level. Could be Mr Nesbitt wants to entertain some clients on Boxing Day or Nicky like me thinks the race has a poor look about it and thought why not.
Only a matter of time until one of Nicky’s less fancied horses finishes ahead of Long Run and people like you and Walley Cohen get the messsage.
Funny old game racing but for Kauto Star on all known form this looks like the easiest King George field he’s had to face in the last 5 years.
As much as I didn’t think Long Run would beat Kauto Star, I have to say, you should never dismiss a young horse. Super performance by the young pretender.

January 15, 2011 at 15:27 #336030Thing about Long Run is he had never been tested and when he was he found ziltch off the bridle.
I can see him tanking along pushing the leaders for the first 2 miles and the sheer pace of the race will have most of them in trouble but when Kauto Star and Imperial Commander are set alight there’s no way will he be able to go with them.
Long Run’s chances of actually winning go from zero to none IMO and at 6/1 he’s an awful EW bet.
Fist, even the "experts" sometimes get it woefully wrong.
To all those who marked up and bet Long Run before Christmas ( myself included } and kept the faith throughout… well done !
It’s our turn to brag.

Yup well done and Long Run not making mistakes is cleary a much better horse than Long Run making mistakes. H
He never raelly looked like they bothered him that much but obviously they were taking a lot more out of him that it looked at the time.
Has to be said the Kauto Star we saw today is not the Kauto Star of old but Long Run has won and can only go on from here.
PS I wouldn’t have 10p on him for the Gold Cup though. I really don’t think he’s suited by the undualting course.
January 15, 2011 at 15:50 #336043I love Kauto but think his best days are behind him. Very, very surprised if he wins the GC but he owes nothing to anybody and will be remembered as one of the all time greats

Kauto has run something like a distance below his best that is just too difficult to swallow. I think I said you just don’t win King George’s if your not 100% if I never I meant too.
I can’t see them keeping him in training and sinserely hope they don’t. I know David Cleary from Timeform Radio said he thought Kauto didn’t look right to him before the race and the last time he looked fussy like he did today was before the Gold Cup.
He’s one of the best judges of all time in racing and it’s too much of a coincidence he said it and for the second time he’s ran a stinker.
It hurts to say it but I think we saw the end of alegebnnd today and PN should either ritire him or find a nice easy race for him and let him bow out on a win.
January 15, 2011 at 15:55 #336046I don’t think we’ll ever see Kauto Star on the racetrack again, and, if we do, then his connections aren’t the people I think them to be. He got away with his life in the Gold Cup, he could easily have fallen today; he’s beyond the point of equilibrium and on a downward trajectory. For the sake of NH racing let’s have a horse that can come back each year and lead the parade at Kempton and Cheltenham. He’s got nothing left to prove to anybody, surely. And, boy, am I glad to see him finish safe and sound today.

Agree totally.
He’s not my fave but I won’t be able to watch the Gold Cup if he runs. My heart can’t take it when I’m waiting for a fall.
Diamond Harry bigger than Long Run? I’m on the winner but he’d be worth a bet (each-way).
January 15, 2011 at 16:08 #336048KS is following a similar path to Moscow Flyer. Let’s not forget that he’s still beaten off some decent horses today but the peak was this race last year – Cheltenham isn’t really his course so to take him back, would imo be pointless.
A brilliant horse for whom age unfortunately has caught him up @ 11.
The best memory? Dumping Ruby at Exeter, Ruby chasing him, getting back on and then being btn a shd!

Totally agree. That’s the Gold Cup run, the Down Royal run where he made hard work of it and now today. Following his incredible King George run last season he hasn’t been the same it looks almost certain that he’s going on the decline and it wouldn’t be fair to the legend to let him continue racing. He’s nothing at all to prove anyway. Knowing the man Clive Smith is I’d be amazed if he doesn’t retire old Kauto now.
January 15, 2011 at 16:45 #336051The old boy’s been at the sharp end in too many major wars. But winning four KGs stretches belief, doesn’t it.

Nonsense.
If the horse is fit, well and showing no signs of injury, why shouldn’t he run again? More to the point, why should connections be castigated for giving him another chance?
Kauto Star was never travelling today, that much is clear, but Ruby Walsh didn’t appear to think he’d deteriorated and Paul Nicholls isn’t exactly in sparkling form (only 4 winners from 35 runners in the last two weeks).
He may well have lost a little bit of pace, but today’s performance didn’t prove it and I’d be inclined to give him at least one opportunity to prove himself when re-united with Walsh; plenty of horses don’t travel for McCoy and Sam Thomas failed to get a real tune out of him the two times he was on board.
Talk of immediate retirement based on one defeat is ridiculous.
January 15, 2011 at 16:47 #336053What was going on with the Tactics. When has Kauto Star been ridden to the pace like that. Especially in such testing condition as the Front Runner’s were struggling to get home. He was keen to boot also. Incredible ride to be honest. Where was the idea of settling the horse in the middle of the pack like Ruby has always done. He was struggling going out the back straight on the final circuit with his jumping but that was always going to be the case since he was being pushed out of his comfort zone 3 wide the whole way.
Sam whaley cowen i dont rate but he gave that horse a peach of a ride. Out thought McCoy the whole way round. Why didnt he drop Kauto in? Only he knows tbh. 3 wide the whole way around on that pace up front was always going to be the complete opposite what Kauto wanted. Astonished the ride has been looked into in detail by JF.
