A superb card at Kempton with this race the jumping highlight – arguably the biggest highlight until Cheltenham.
OK, Kauto could print money again for his legion of fans but I am going to go the same way as I usually do in such races – E/W win chance with sound place credentials.
So LONG RUN for me at 13/2 E/W. He
could
dethrone the champ if he improves for the distance and track.
I can’t see anything else winning bar the front two in the betting. The Nightingale will not be quick enough IMHO.
A reverse F/C Long Run and Kauto the day’s best bet.
I DOOOOOOO hope Kauto wins, he is the best horse I have ever seen over fences, perhaps likely to ever see – which is a pretty sad and scary thing to say.
Purely punting-wise, though, I’ll go for the Henderson horse as he is value at the price to upset the jolly.
Will this race be a cracker?!

January 15, 2011 at 07:36 #335908An arb has developed in Riverside Theatre each way – get on quick at 16-1 and 1/4 the odds a place before it goes. Betfair is 17.5/1 win and 2.8/1 place.

Riverside Theatre is also my idea of the value bet – 4 from 4 on course and I have always thought that this one has a big race in him.
I would dearly tear up that 16/1 ticket though to see Kauto do it. I think the 4/6 price is probably about right as nothing else in the race is close to any of Kautos good runs.
I did think the Down Royal run was a bit workmanlike though. I know Nicholls doesn’t have them tuned up for the first run but some of the spark looks missing.
I want him to win and win in a style reflective of his superstar status. Kauto has given so many heartleaping moments to racegoers, this could be his swan song as I don’t think he will be able to win his Gold Cup back again, that would be a step too hard. The King George was made for him though.
Heart, Kauto, Head, Riverside ew, Pocket, Pepe Simo in the 12.20!!
January 15, 2011 at 09:14 #335919I don’t think Kauto will get around and if he does I still think Riverside Theatre will beat him. 2 Mile speed and seems to love Kempton.
Riverside theatre at 16’s each-way is my bet.
I think we could see Kauto run his last race tomorrow guys.
I’m tempted to go with this. Not likely, but will this be the day that KS says "enough of all this," as horses sometimes seem to do?
He’s not getting any younger: obviously. I’m looking for something to take him on with: probably Forpaddydeplasterer/Riverside Theatre ….
Having said that, it’s all a gamble –
when
the game’s straight!
January 15, 2011 at 10:00 #335923Already on Nacarat and Riverside Theatre.
Sadly, also on Imperial Commander.Prefered the ground a little better (slight stamina issues). But…
If having a bet right now, it would have to be Riverside Theatre each way. 16/1 looks too big. As often the case, second-string allowed to go off at massive odds.Like many here though, it won’t stop me cheering home Kauto Star.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 15, 2011 at 10:12 #335926I had a bet on Imperial commander aswell and next to Kauto I have backed Riverside Theatre and Nacarat. But I really hope that Kauto wins today.

Not cause I’ve only backed Riverside Theatre but because I don’t like Kauto Star, I hope he loses.
I don’t know whether it’s because he cost me a forune in the QMCC 2006 or the fact that Paul Nicholls favours him to Denman, maybe it’s neither but I just don’t like the horse.
I punched the air for ages when he was beat at Cheltenham because of the way the trainer and papers were harping on, I’ll do the same if he loses today.
I don’t wish a fall or injury mind, not on any horse.

the game’s straight!
I don’t think this is the sort of contest where that comment should arise. The people who constantly moan about the sport on these sorts of forums should maybe concentrate more on the better races.

I agree to keep it in another thread but sayin "they should concentrate on better races" is almost saying it’s his own fault when it’s not. If people weren’t breaking the rules there’d be no problem.
January 15, 2011 at 11:48 #335949If you punt at the low level it’s just one of the variances you have to take into account imo.
Anyway, I think Kauto will struggle today. He looked tired towards the end of his run at Down Royal and although it was his first contest of the year the form he showed the previous season on his debut was a lot better. Sizing Europe didn’t jump or travel well so for him to get as close to Kauto as he did just shows how far below his best the great one was. I think he might have gone.
I’m on Long Run ante-post
January 15, 2011 at 11:50 #335950I can’t really understand all this passion for THE NIGHTINGALE. 10/1 is very low for a horse who has never ridden on such a distance in this category. He really is brave and gutsy horse, but it’s difficult for me to imagine him beating his stablemate. I prefer NACARAT to him, he’s a very experienced horse and I would be delighted to see him grabing a place.
I’m struggling to see a horse who is capable to beat Kauto Star. Maybe Long Run can create a surprise, given the fact he has beaten french Rubi Ball when he was four years old, and bearing in mind what the latter has achieved since.
Here are my third favorites:
1. KAUTO STAR
2. LONG RUN
3. NACARATJanuary 15, 2011 at 12:03 #335951I wish Ruby was riding him today. Although never being Kautos greatest fan, I’m more nervous about this race than any race I’ve watched for a long long time. I either want him to win, and win well, or lose to a better horse and show that he’s over the top. As long as he’s back home in his stable tonight safe and sound.

It is a good job you added the last sentence Phil.
Even so, not liking a horse because he fell / cost you money seems a bit childish to me. Not the horse’s fault for being considered by most people (not just Nicholls) as better than Denman.
"Punching the air" when he did not win. Again, not the horses fault the race got "hyped up".
Get a perspective.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 15, 2011 at 13:46 #335982I personally hope Kauto wins a 5th one, purely from sentiment. But i am concerned over the choice of mccoy riding him. Obviously the top jockey of this generation but a totally different style to ruby and i cant see it suiting Kauto. BUT – id love him to win!
January 15, 2011 at 14:55 #336010Planet of Sound at 20/1 is amazing value and has my e/w money.
January 15, 2011 at 15:08 #336013Hahaha i remember sticking up for Long Run and getting stick for it. I smirk.
January 15, 2011 at 15:09 #336014Never going today was Kauto.
He is finished in my opinion, not the horse he was.
Wasn’t overly impressed with his win at Down Royal, and today, he was never, ever going.
Well done to Long Run who was travelling really well, and has lengthened away from the field.
Big run from Riverside Theatre too.
Unfortunate for the Kauto Star fans, but he just isn’t the horse he once was.
Oh any by the way,
nothing
to do with AP taking the ride, before someone mentions it.
