‘very promising’- JJD.
Interesting words to use for a horse that has already won 4 Grade 1 all-aged chases at trips ranging from 2m to 3m. Obviously he made a 1 bad mistake (4 out) and a silly 1 at the last and if you are going to do that, there’s a chance you aren’t going to get away with it every time.
Not sure the bare form is actually that great today, Exotic Dancer and Puntal might have been expected to be beaten further and the time isn’t all that spectacular compared to the Feltham. So in that regard, if you are not yet one of the converted, he still has something to prove.

Come on JJD – a shrewd judge such as yourself must surely recognise that this horse hasn’t ‘promised’. He has now delivered in unarguably comprehensive and decisive fashion. To call him ‘promising’ is like saying that Alex Ferguson might one day make a decent manager.
December 26, 2006 at 21:46 #34403I think he is top class and brilliant on his day. Think he can throw a dodgy jump but gets away with it on soft/heavy ground. His real test will come in a bigger field and more importantly on much faster going. I just have my doubts about him at Cheltenham, the trainer said the King George was the "ideal" race for him in terms of track, going and trip. 3m2f, on much faster ground, undulating track and bigger field….I dunno just dont think it will suit. Maybe he is that exceptional he will get away with it, but certainly couldnt look at betting at the current prices (cue a list of people with their 10/1, 20/1 prices!!!).
Probably not, but what % do you factor into his price?
Anything above evens for GC is a good price imhaho, because there’s not a horses out there that will beat him if no mistakes are forthcoming

December 26, 2006 at 21:47 #34405To sum it up really, I think Mouse Morris and co would be slightly less wary of him now after todays run than say after the Haydock race or Tingle Creek.

I’d imagine Mouse and co will be having nightmares between now and March featuring big brown horses with huge white blazes coming careering at them, teeth a gnashing, hooves a flashing while a big, red faced, horny headed, devilish Mr. Nicholls laughs insanely in the background.
December 27, 2006 at 01:00 #34407A bit unfair to state that the "closeness" of Exotic Dancer devalues the form. ED looks very progressive and must be a live candidate for the Ryanair.
December 27, 2006 at 02:25 #34408How far would WOA have won the KG on this seasons evidence?

"there is simply no precedent for a horse that shows that little respect for a fence winning the race"
Not since Kicking King, anyway?:)

December 27, 2006 at 10:37 #34412Kauto Star was not to my eyes as impressive as at haydock. To a certain extent I blame Ruby Walsh in that I think he was afraid that Monet’s Garden might run away from them at the front and he did not want to make up to much ground too fast at the end ( which is a common worry about kempton) Given the way he hurdles his fences as opposed to the classic jumping style I can understand that thinking but , in retrospect, ridden as McCoy rode Exotic Dancer I feel would have been more appropriate.
I still believe he is the most talented horse I have seen in years but he is the flashy chancer rather than the highly talented but also grinding " Tiger Woods" type. As such, as a firm supporter, I shall have sweaty palms throughout the Gold Cup
December 27, 2006 at 10:56 #34413I share some of the concerns regarding KS’s jumping, he often looks untidy and appears unconvincing. However in 9 races he’s only been on the floor once which makes him a 1/8 shot to get round (well, sort of!). It is encouraging that his athleticism helps him get away with the occasional blip.
It may be significant that his only upset occured on his only run at Cheltenham although he did fall at a fence which was affected by the sun on that day and could be excused the error, if you’re feeling generous. ÂÂÂ
War of Attrition, while a sound jumper, benefitted last year from participating in a poor Gold Cup renewal (take a look at the full race result again, with the benefit of hindsight it now looks pretty weak) and to suggest that KS wouldn’t annihilate Hedgehunter and/or Forget The Past is to deny the obvious.
December 27, 2006 at 11:05 #34414Cormack how far would they have to go then before Hedgehunter would beat Kauto Star?

He has fallen twice in 9 races.
December 27, 2006 at 12:39 #34416Beat me to it David!
On good fast ground I would expect WOA to easily beat the likes of Exotic Dancer. Just not had his ground yet.
