Before this all gets ridiculous….
Paul Nicholls just gave his post race interview to the BBC. HE revealed HE decided the tactics today NOT Ruby. He was also man enough to admit he got it wrong, it was his fault not Ruby’s and the jockey was upset with him.
So climb down from those high horses now please.

I think you have been affected psychologically by your hatred for Walsh.April 3, 2008 at 13:58 #155446

Some serious pocket speak on this thread.
I didn’t have a bet in the race. Does that therefore make my opinion more valuable?

CR,
That doesn’t make the ride any better – just that the fault for it lies with Nicholls and not Ruby. Still an appalling, nonsensical idea..And, again, credit to Our Vic, who stayed on and battled tremendously. Great horse.
April 3, 2008 at 14:07 #155456Now I make no secret of the fact that I would follow Ruby over a cliff, but my view of the Nicholls interview was that he was taking the blame for something that wasn’t entirely of his making. A couple of his comments hinted that he thought Ruby had taken his ‘ride him positive’ comments a bit too literally, and also Ruby is experienced enough to change the pre-agreed tactics if the race isn’t panning out to suit – he has done so successfully (Master Minded in the Game Spirit comes to mind) without the trainer having any complaints.
However, having said that, I think that Kauto would still have won if he hadn’t decided to take the 2nd last with him and knocked the stuffing out of himself, and I don’t think Ruby can entirely take the blame for that. KS’s ‘old’ errors tended to be when Ruby sat still, but watching the replay, he clearly tries to make KS’s mind up for him and the horse just lifts off out of his hands.
Without the hard race in the Gold Cup I think he would have won, and I hope chasing the Order of Merit hasn’t finished him off for good (I remember Azertyuiop).
April 3, 2008 at 14:18 #155467I stand by what I said. It was bizarre ride, never mind who came up with the idea – be it jockey or trainer.

So Walsh should ignore Nicholls and not ride to instructions?

April 3, 2008 at 14:46 #155485It is easy in hindsight but with Our Vic being a dodgy stayer / weak finisher in the past was it really such a bad move to be so positive on Kauto?
Kauto landed right on top of the second last and for once a jumping error had an affect on him, had he jumped that fence properly he would’ve won.

No. Nicholls should take the blame.
April 3, 2008 at 15:07 #155493The bookie’s post race response.
Kauto Star – 7/1 for next year’s Gold Cup.
I thought KS had the race tied up, but paddled the penultimate fence (not for the first time). Our Vic ran a cracking race and Murphy took full advantage.
Kauto Star may well come back raring to go next season, as Paul Nicholls said, but as I opined previously – sadly, I think we have seen the best of him.

April 3, 2008 at 15:26 #155500As i said "H" he shouldnt have been there……I am probably the least upset on here at this result as i half expected it and you of all people "H" I would have expected more from.
I have seen dozens of horses come to liverpool and all sorts of excuses be made for them by punters……….I would bet my life that Kauto Star ran well below form was over the top and will come back next year fresh and well and win the King George standing on his head………and I would bet my backside he will not run at Ascot next year and be at Cheltenham fighting fit….he’s a young horse with loads still to offer.
They botter not offer me 3/1 for the King George this year I’ll clean them out

i’m more of the opinion that different conditions suit different horses or else do we say Blazing Bailey, Our Vic and binocular all had easy races at cheltenham?

I love reading your posts, Fist of Fury, and I commend your enthusiasm for the sport. I also agree with you on quite a few things you say ( I fancied Binocular today also, as it happens ); but on Kauto Star; well, I guess we’ll continue to agree to disagree.
Sentiment is one thing, and last season, there was no bigger fan and champion of the horse than me. However, experience can be a very harsh tutor indeed – and reality hit home some time ago; whereby the penny finally dropped that by sticking by my favourite horse/s for sentimental reasons, when it was probably obvious to everyone around me, that the once great horse I placed so much trust in, was now sadly on the decline – and no matter how much faith (or money) I had placed on it, or self re-assuring, it still could not alter the fact that the said horse in question was never going to replicate the form which brought him those past glories.
As I said to you in another thread – time alone will tell which of us is proved correct regarding Kauto’s future performances. If I am proved wrong, then sackcloth and ashes will be the order of the day. One thing’s for sure -you will be the first ro remind me.

And of course,I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Indeed, I don’t know how you ended up backing him: one of the reasons why I laid him was because you reminded me of Walsh’s ‘he may have left his race behind at Ascot’ comment in your first post on that thread!
(Sorry I know that isn’t much consolation).
April 3, 2008 at 16:27 #155530Spare a thought for the poor punter who had quarter of a million on Kauto Star.

April 3, 2008 at 16:43 #155539I don’t talk about "great" horses, as my main concern is punting, but, imo, that KS is not a great chaser at all. Can’t jump properly. That’s the wrong jockey for the thing, anyway, imo.
Still, they beat my selection by 14!
Winner was too strong under a good ride from Timmy. Not to worry, all the KS supporters can now get sevens for next year.
But, if folk insist on talking about "greatness", I’d say
Binocular has a bright future, and so does young Aidan Colman. Two positives from todays card, imo.Aintree favourites today were poor in the main; and, as we know, that’s how bookies stay in business.
