We shall see in march who comes out on top where it matters. It’ll be close, but my money may well be on THE TANK
December 26, 2009 at 21:39 #265722For all that it would be great to see Kauto and Denman take each other on outside the Festival, the fact that they only meet in the Gold Cup does allow the tension to build to near breaking-point through the season – especially given the scale of the performances each horse achieved in their last run. It’s almost better that they don’t meet beforehand, in order that the end-game can be played out in the Gold Cup. It is almost stupefyingly mouth-watering now.
Much as I’ve always been in the Kauto Star camp, I don’t think statements like “Even Denman would have been beaten X lengths today” are at all helpful or necessary. We should just be grateful that, for all that they have different styles and preferences, both horses appear equally suited to the rigours of a Gold Cup. I don’t think there is even a ground bias, and if there is one at all, it is probably in Kauto’s favour (if it came up quicker).
Both are tremendous examples of steeplechasers, for similar, and also very different, reasons. That’s something worth celebrating, regardless of the outcome in March.
December 26, 2009 at 23:42 #265749Truly sublime performance from Kauto Star. The 2nd and 3rd horses behind him are no slouches but they were totally brushed aside today … and with such ease!
A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I fancied Denman to win the forthcoming Gold Cup. I’m now leaning towards Kauto Star to win it.
December 27, 2009 at 01:41 #265779What a year for horse racing! Kauto, Denman, Sea The Stars.
We are so privaleged to have the likes of Kauto and Denman around.
What an astonishing horse, even Denman would’ve been beaten double figure lengths today.
The greatest steeplechaser I’ve ever seen.
Yes, but 3m 2f on soft at Cheltenham would change the situation more than a little. Everything is up for grabs in March.
That takes nothing away from the judgement about Kauto Star. The edge he has over Denman is his versatility as far as direction of track, going and distance are concerned.
December 27, 2009 at 23:14 #265972I honestly thought he would find this year a real toughy and expected more from Imperial Commander – even if he is better left-handed but I was left speechless by a faultless display. Paul Nicholls feels he had never been better and I think we witnessed true greatness – what a horse who gives so much pleasure.
