Seeing a horse jump and win like this is why I love jump racing. It was sheer pleasure to watch yes I am sure the horse can go the Gold Cup distance.
P.S. I take back previously what I have said about iris’s Gift jumping.Although he ran out of steam I was impressed with his jumping.
November 18, 2006 at 18:24 #31342Best since Moscow Flyer. I would have thought he’s broken the 180 mark with that.

November 18, 2006 at 19:35 #31343Sensational
Is there anything to add? Is there anything that can beat him?
It was an extraordinarily authorative performance and my god, he can stay further for sure
November 18, 2006 at 19:42 #31344Best since Hawk Wing :)
November 18, 2006 at 19:43 #31345Oh no
Dont start that one off :o
November 18, 2006 at 20:02 #31346lol
November 18, 2006 at 20:02 #31347Agree, sensational. You cannot fault that peformance.
November 18, 2006 at 20:34 #31348Yes ,the real deal , he is only 6 , so lets keep the superlatives on ice until we see just how good he is next year
I agree with Gareth 180 is fair
thank God jumping always saves racing as the flat is so boring nowa days , will he be 4/1 for the gold cup on Monday ???
what a prospect

November 18, 2006 at 21:04 #31349Ricky, you always seem to slate the flat, get over it man and enjoy both codes.
Kauto Star was fantastic today but do we really want to see a certain individual wallop a top class field?
I have my reasons for not being not as keen on NH racing as I am about the flat but today Kauto Star was a joy to watch, his superb jumping made it easier for me. I enjoyed seeing Racing Demon, Kicks For Free & Hardy Eustace too, in all four great performances today.
November 18, 2006 at 21:14 #31350i think those other three fine performances have almost been slightly overlooked today
HE looked wonderful in the paddock today and his market drift was baffling i must say. Seeing him live reminded me what a beautiful actaul hurdler he is (although why that should be different from TV i dunno).
RD showe some class today even given his the drift in the jumping. M and T had no excuses that i could see and T jumped particularly well and stayed on proving fitness perhaps
A fine days racing…
November 18, 2006 at 22:19 #31351Racing Demon would be a corking animal if he could ever learn to jump straight, and he lost little increments of ground at some of his latter obstacles even with the course orientation to suit.
Not sure I’d row in with him for the King George on today’s evidence. Kicking King’s first win two years ago and Edredon Bleu’s triumph in the same race the year before that remind us that having recorded no previous wins beyond 2m4f / 2m4.5f is no absolute bar to success. However, they were the first two such winners since Desert Orchid in 1986, and plenty of other horses seeking a first triumph over 4f further than ever before have failed to land a King George since then.
Further, this was still only his sixth chase start, and of course the previous one of those at Exeter didn’t last very long. Only See More Business (1997) in the last ten years has taken the race after so few tries over fences.
Thisthatandtother is definitely one to take from the race as far as I’m concerned. He was still carrying maybe a little bit more weight than ideal on close inspection in the paddock, but was clearly race-fit all the same and jumped beautifully in the main.
Barring a savaging from the handicapper for this, he’s going to remain a mark not too far removed from that off which he was running a big race before falling in the Robin Cook Memorial last year, and he’d have to merit serious consideration for this year’s renewal of that now.

November 19, 2006 at 01:02 #31352Kauto Star ran like a machine he was simply awesome today.
Beef or Salmon and lami look like they ran their races to me and Kauto Star beat them like a Derby winner beating a seller it couldn’t possibly have been any easier.
Nothing will beat him at Kempton if he gets round and is in this sort of form. Cheltenham is another matter an extra almost three furlongs up that daunting hill, by no means a penalty kick.
Best since – ? On todays performance I can’t think of a better horse over 3 miles since maybe Dessie.

Define "ran their race" – they can’t both have run up to a mark consistent with their best previous form!

I don’t. KK was only worth 175 after his Gold Cup win. I simply cannot see how today’s win is worth 5lb superiority over a Gold Cup winner.
Let’s see what he beat today …
Kingscliff – Woof, woof
BoS – Has never run his true race on this side of the sea
Ollie Magern – Has been
Iris’s Gift – Nowhere near as good over fences
L’Ami – An honorable animal, usually runs a meritable race
The way I see it, he’s beaten inferior horses on the day. When he does the same to Monet’s Garden and War Of Attrition, i’ll start using superlatives.
Sorry, but that’s the way I see it.
November 19, 2006 at 01:47 #31355For me, the best chase performance since Best Mates 2nd Gold cup.
As for the cheltenham extra 3f (not 2f?), I don’t think it matters. he never left 3rd gear, he could have gone on for another half mile uphill.
November 19, 2006 at 02:38 #31356By extra almost 3f I mean the Gold Cup is run over 3m 2 1/2 furlongs and is on a stiffer track.
Lami ran to his best IMO and Beef Or Salmon ran up to his form of his win against War Of Attrition (IMO) therefore running to form of his seasons best so far.
Just clearing those two points up.
November 19, 2006 at 09:29 #31357Racing Post jumps handicapper Steve Mason
"He won very easily and, although I’ll need to look at the times of the other races and have another look, it’s pretty safe to say that Kauto Star will be given a figure in excess of 180. L’Ami, who has no pretensions to being topclass, was third, and I’ll probably rate the race around him, but I’d imagine the winner will still be above 180."
BHB senior jumps handicapper Phil Smith
"He was very impressive, and his jumping was exceptionally good. It seems a pretty straightforward race to rate if you rate it through L’Ami. I had him running to 158 three times last season, and after Kauto Star beat him by 18 lengths, it seems sensible to give Kauto Star a rating of 176 – and that takes no account of the manner of the victory. It looked the performance of a horse capable of doing anything, but whether he can do it at Cheltenham is another matter – that’s the only doubt about him."
Wonder what TF will award KS?
178 prior to BF Chase
