Kauto’s performance today confirmed an inkling I have had since his Gold Cup defeat last season.
He’s a big danger to Denman if he’s anything less than 100%.

I make it 182 today.
Your clock must be fast.
December 27, 2008 at 03:03 #199390Albertas is just the type I can see running on for a place in a Gold Cup after looking in trouble earlier on.
I’m a big Kauto fan but I’m a NH fanatic so even I’d like to see Denman win impressively in the AON to set up a proper rematch. I think its an excellent idea to keep Kauto fresh and I just pray we get decent ground on the day this time…
Its just great that he is still at the top for me though as he could quite easily have flopped this season after all those hard races last year and again today after his Betfair mishap but once again he has stood up when it matters.

When did Kauto ever leave?
December 27, 2008 at 03:07 #199392I can’t have that anywhere near a 182 performance.
I’ve got it at 172+ (probably value for another 4-5 lengths), with VPU and Alberta’s Run hitting 167.
December 27, 2008 at 03:18 #199400Never mind his rating. What we saw was a champion performance from a proven champion. Some of his jumping was absolutley brilliant and he did well to put in a short one when wrong at the last. Denman will have to be on the top of his game in March.
Don’t underatand Air Force One’s run at all. Has he been over hyped perhaps?
Didn’t think much of Tidal Bay at Wetherby either. Carries his head in a very funny way which makes him look as if something is wrong with either his back or his wind.
December 27, 2008 at 03:20 #199401First time I`ve ever backed the horse – if you dismiss the Haydock form as I did, the the opposition didn`t look very serious. Think Exotic Dancer may well have been second especially with Geraghty as a likely booking. Pleased to see Alberta`s Run show his wellbeing though
December 27, 2008 at 03:28 #199405Actually, on the subject of kauto’s win, a big congratulations to clive smith, who sat through the morning line this morning whilst there was an air of doubt about kauto still being at his best. You could actually sense an atmosphere of people not really fancying KS but not wanting to be too vocal due to clive’s presence. He looked a bit gobsmacked when McCrirrick read out pricewise’s comments from the racing post.
Well done to all concerned with kauto, hopefully he comes out of this season good and well and does number 4 next year.
December 27, 2008 at 03:55 #199420I am disappointed with TB’s run at Wetherby….but hasn’t his action always been like that?

Value Is EverythingDecember 27, 2008 at 06:34 #199450Nah we’re mainly just discussing the horse here rather than the race.
December 27, 2008 at 15:06 #199478If you assume that’s as good as Kauto is these days (value for 10-12 lengths say) then IMO you have to take the opinion that he’s not as good as he once was. Good to see he’s still capable of top-class form though.
I also side with AP’s comments to an extent- far from the opinion put forward by some (most notably his jockey IIRC) that Kauto’s better going left, if anything he’s at his best the other way round.
December 27, 2008 at 15:16 #199480It may or may not be a performance right up to his very best on the form book. But he won easily enough to suggest he is capable of running to his best. At least on a sharp track.
I’ll be taking him on at Cheltenham though, Denman or no Denman. Never been at his best there. Will be too short.
Anyway, let’s celebrate the horse. Does not matter how good he is anywhere else, he’s awsome around Kempton.
How anyone rates the performance depends on whether you think Voy Por ran to form. If you think he did (I don’t quite) then Kauto was somewhere near his best. I do think Alberta’s improved but by how much? Trouble is there is no horse there who I would say ran exactly to form, so it is difficult to give ratings. My guess is VPU ran to within a few pounds of his Timeform rating.

Value Is EverythingDecember 27, 2008 at 17:13 #199519I’ve answered the ratings points in the Big Race forum for those who replied to my earlier post.
December 27, 2008 at 17:44 #199531As far as ratings are concerned, VPU is a totally unknown qunatity over 3 miles and we as yet don’t know how much Jonjo’s has improved…..I would have thought that would make it kind of difficult to come up with an accurate figure?
Right handed track…….I think you will find that Chetenham is left handed and if you investigate further you will find he won a race there called the Cheltenham Gold Cup and finished second in it the year after.

I think you are making an issue out of nothing and the horse would have won those Grade 1’s just as easily had the same tracks been reveresed.
Can be no excuses come Gold Cup day. He’s won a Gold Cup so we know he gets the trip and if he can’t beat Denman this time round then it has to be said Denman is the better horse.
Denman has won at all distances himself and who’s to say he couldn’t have won 3 King George’s if he wasn’t KS’s stable companion?……..I don’t think he is a better horse than Kauto Star. If they both jumped round Cheltenham and both were spot on there would only be one winner in my book,,,,,,,,,,,,the former is one big if, but no Ascot this year…..he’ll be juming out his skin and raring to go……..I’m pretty confident Kauto and Ruby will prove unbeatable come March.

I don’t agree that Denman should be considered a better horse than Kauto if he beats Kauto at Cheltenham this March. If Denman does win the GC again then I’d be happy to concede that Denman is a better "Gold Cup" horse. However, Kauto is classier, more versatile, has a better turn of foot and has achieved much more to date.
I’d take Kauto Star over Denman any day of the week from 2m-3m. However, this battle between the two is run in the GC which imo suits Denman perfectly. I’d love to see Kauto and Denman battle out a King George or a race at a shorter distance but that will never happen. Not just because they are stablemates but because Denman is being specifically aimed at races that suit him perfectly. There is nothing wrong with that but I would like to see him take more chances.

I couldn’t have said it better myself, Magistretti.
