interesting to read that kauto star will proberly miss next years betfair chase as the new dog track style jump course dosent suit him. lets hope other trainers do the the same and maybe just maybe the wooden tops at the bha might move it to a proper steeplechase track like aintree or ascot.
December 16, 2008 at 01:27 #197153Well Kauto jumped the old Haydock perfectly well unlike the new jumps track.
The place is pathetic now as regards jumps racing, Be glad when they finally make it into an AW so they can put it out of its misery.
I dont mean that they are building an AW its just at the moment what they have got is a token gesture towards NH racing and not the NH course it was.
December 16, 2008 at 01:27 #197154were these the same fences he won over the year before??

Given the race is registered as the Lancashire Chase, it would be rather unfair for it to go to Ascot, which makes Haydock look like a top class jumps track anyway.
December 16, 2008 at 01:33 #197157only mentioned ascot as they race the same day. maybe as aintree the next day is about to lose its slot on the bbc they should have aintree on the saturday instead and run the betfair chase there along with the becher/grand sefton chases. what a card that would be.
December 16, 2008 at 02:15 #197170I don;t know about anyone else but it sound like a feeble attempt at an excuse by PN to me to cover his backside.
So they changed Haydock, but to such an extent the great Kauto Star is flat to the boards at the last against two comparitively moderate animals?
I maintain that PN let him down a bit too far and sent him there less fit than neccessary with the intent of saving his best for the King George.
December 16, 2008 at 03:02 #197192I have to admit he didnt seem to travel that well through the race and personally dont think Paul Nichols is the type of guy who makes excuses
December 16, 2008 at 03:36 #197207Sam Thomas might disagree with you Rich

Welcome to TRF by the way!December 16, 2008 at 04:01 #197213Kauto didn’t travel well at Aintree or Cheltenham last year either – just what is his track? Mr Nicholls claims Haydock isn’t the big galloping track it used to be well Kempton isn’t big and galloping either but Kauto seems perfectly happy there on Boxing Days.
I think PN is talking nonsense to be honest.
December 16, 2008 at 14:11 #197250I think perhaps Mr Nicholls is spending just a bit too much time taking tips from Alex Ferguson. At least I hope that’s the case, I’d hate this press release to be a thinly-veiled protest at the removal of the drop fences.
December 16, 2008 at 14:41 #197260Happy to run Denman there though eh PN?
Sad attempt from Ditcheat to cover up Kauto’s failings. Haydock lost a good few races to stage the Lancashire Chase ie. the Edward Hanmer, Tommy Whittle etc. (all now staged as Class C or B handicaps) which used to feature some great clashes and real track favourites – Bobby Grant, The Last Fling and Young Kenny to name just three.
Keep the Lancashire Chase in Lancashire
December 16, 2008 at 15:09 #197274I’m hoping it’s more a case of PN messing up than Kauto but we won’t know that until after the King Goerge
The fact is a champion, if no one minds me calling him that, shoud be able to win races at all different types of tracks when he is so superior to the opposition…. The way Kauto Star ran at Haydock there is a lot more to it than saying it was the track at fault.
December 16, 2008 at 19:05 #197346As I said in the King George thread, PN seems to have an excuse for every defeat of a high profile horse, this just adds to the list. It was Ok last year, though admittedly he wasn’t that impressive either. The Old Roan Chase was great the year he won it, but the next year it wasn’t his track, yert he still went back to Aintree in april. Come on Paul, get it right.
December 17, 2008 at 01:50 #197520Would have to agree with FOF, Ian et al. Sounds like sour grapes unfortunately. Two years ago he would have won that race pulling a cart with Jade Goody in the plate, fences not suiting indeed.

Now there’s an image to conjour with – the Boadicea of Bermondsey.
Innit.
