Looked a shodow of himself there. Hard to watch that.
April 3, 2008 at 13:46 #155426That could be the end of Kauto Star as a top quality racehorse.
April 3, 2008 at 13:50 #155428Interesting reaction from Nicholls. He told Ruby to be positive, Ruby disagreed but went ahead with the instructions. Nicholls taking the blame. Puzzling state of affairs.
My reaction before hearing Nicholls, was one of surprise at Walsh’s ride. If he’d have dropped him in and got the horse relaxed, the result would have been different.
I’m very puzzled after watching that.
April 3, 2008 at 13:50 #155429Yes he did look a shadow of the animal that hacked up in the King George and Commercial First. Walsh appeared to be stuck in two minds about whether to kick on or join Our Vic. He was on and off the bridle at regular intervals. He didn’t look an easy ride there though.
I’m disappointed as I think he may well be on the down turn.
April 3, 2008 at 13:51 #155430No he didin’t – Walsh totally robbed the horse of his winning chance.
Rubys ride was questionable but Kauto looked like he wanted to give up when he hit that fence, when kauto was at his best he would have humped that field. That wasn’t the same hosre that won the King George, be it through hitting that fence, ruby or whatever.

Why ?
Using a fit Exotic Dancer as a guide he’s run to form. OK so Our Vic has comprehensively turned round the form but since he’s been sent to the front with the blinkers on he’s a different beast IMHO. Looks like they’ve gone a good clip so Kauto’s doubful stamina has been tested.
Looks like a very very good performance from Our Vic rather than an overly disappointing display by Kauto Star.
April 3, 2008 at 13:53 #155434Can I just say – Great performance by Our Vic. I for one didn’t think he’d get the trip against such horses as Kauto and Exotic, but he battled on and has been like a new horse this season.
April 3, 2008 at 13:53 #155435More than possible that a good summer will put him right again. Can’t discount that he’s on the downgrade, but I’m an optimist and I’m looking forward to seeing him back next season.
Still not sure Ruby isn’t to blame despite what Nicholls says…
April 3, 2008 at 13:53 #155436It wasn’t a smart move running him so soon after such a gruelling race at Cheltenham.
It is to the horse’s credit that he very nearly won today despite looking miles below his best.
April 3, 2008 at 13:55 #155438Bit soon to be writing him off IMO, will win at the top level again next season.
April 3, 2008 at 13:56 #155441As I said on the other thread, he didn’t look to be completely at ease for the last circuit and a half, which may mean this has come too soon after what was a gruelling Gold Cup. Exotic Dancer hasn’t quite run to form either, potentially lending weight to the idea that the race was harder on the horses than it looked.
April 3, 2008 at 13:57 #155443It was a bits and pieces race from Kauto Star. It didn’t seem to me that the tactics lost him the race, more that he made too many mistakes at crucial times. Had he not stepped on the second last he would have won. As it was sheer guts almost saw him home. Perhaps just one race too many after Cheltenham, but he’s an 8yo and I can’t believe his best is behind him.
Give a bit of credit to Old Vic who had course and going to suit him and ran to his absolute best.

We shall see – Azertyuiop never came back after they went cash hunting with him.

Do you think that was it was? I thought it was Clive Smith looking to end the season on a winning note, and giving the horse the pubic profile he deserves.

He didn’t look at ease in the Gold Cup and that was put down to Denman…or at least that is what plenty wanted us to believe.Kauto Star is a shadow of his former self. In his last two races he has struggled to get past the likes of Our Vic and Neptune Collonges. In the Gold Cup we were told that Denman “forcedâ€
April 3, 2008 at 14:06 #155452Between the 1970 Arc and Champion Stakes, Vincent O’Brien thought that Nijinsky was back to his best. If even he could be wrong about a horse’s well-being, so can Paul Nicholls.
In my opinion, Kauto Star at his best would have won today despite the misguided tactics.

He will be back – I would give him a long Summer from now (give up any thoughts of the Order of Merit if that was what they were chasing) and go again next year.
looked an incrediably tired animal from the second last though he did pick up a bit when Our Vic stormed up the home straight.
Not a true reflextion on the horse. tactically it was a nighmare and the GC took its toll. Would still fancy it for next years KG – whether Denman is running or not. He has put out to 5/1 for next years GC
