Hello
With all the talk about Kempton and the proposed All Weather track at Newmarket. It got me thinking how about jumping at chelmsford. I think I read last week about chelmsford wanting a turf track put in well would there be any merit in having a jumps track there. If newmarket did get the all weather track and people have said chelmsford would suffer from that, well as jumping is the more popular would that be a possibilty? I personally don’t want kempton to shut. But could jumping at chelmsford happen anyway?
January 16, 2017 at 18:12 #1282390Hi. I like the idea but personally I dont believe it will be possible to have jumping at Chelmsford.
The track itself is in the middle of no where in regards to location i.e. not close to a train station/bus route etc. for racegoers travelling without cars.
In addition the viewing of races is difficult because you cant see the whole track from one viewing point like you can with most other tracks.
What i mean by that is, the bar, dining, parade ring etc. are all situated in the middle of the racetrack, as opposed to by the back.
Therefore, say you are stood by the winning post, your only live view (besides the big screen) is from about the 3f pole, which doesnt give you that real buzz that say Newbury, Cheltenham, Kempton, Sandown or Ascot does.I personally just dont feel that Chelmsford has the necessary facilities to host jumps racing.
It does however do a good job of the AW but as I say its a shame about the viewing facilities.
January 16, 2017 at 19:45 #1282407Hopefully someone could clarify whether the new grandstand will be built on the inside or outside of the course? If it’s the inside then it shows that racegoers are not welcome.
It’s going to contain a casino with the idea being that it will be Britain’s first racing casino. So I suspect Chelmsford’s priorities are the levy payments, media rights and gambling revenues rather than jumps racing.
They are looking at pumping their profits into prize money with a claim that every meeting could have £100k in prize money so racing could benefit.
