I’ve just spent a small portion of my Authorized winnings on a huge piece of humble pie for those of you who questioned the horse – made Dylan Thomas look average.
Average King George or high quality Juddmonte? How dare people question PCH’s judgement!
Next stop France. Zambezi Sun will be the main danger. The rest will be quaking in their hooves after that – Mandur-WHO?
The King George was awful as a race BUT the winner is a very good horse and he slammed them as he should’ve. The Juddmonte was for me the best race of the season, a proper group one and the first three home were the big three. Race run at a proper pace, the form should be solid.
Authorized and Dylan Thomas are very good horses.
The Arc – If Authorized is at his best he’s going to be very difficult to beat. He should get his ground, the race should be run to suit and he will be even better over twelve furlongs.
Authorized proving himself has made the flat season for me.

Let’s not forget that Manduro beat Dylan Thomas and Notnowcato just as easy, – no, actually he beat them easier than Authorized did today, and that was in an equally hot group 1 over almost identical conditions. Manduro has also won another Group 1 very easily indeed since Ascot.
I am a big Authorized fan, but it would be folly to put him ahead of Manduro at this stage of his career. Manduro in my opinion is sensational and rightly regarded at the best horse in Europe.

August 21, 2007 at 15:50 #111979I think Manduro vs Authorized vs Dylan Thomas makes for a stunning Arc. Three 130+ animals, and that’s before we even start thinking about Soldier Of Fortune, the French 3yos or any of the fillies.

Absolutely! The conditions of the Arc should bring out further improvement in Authorized. I backed Zambezi Sun for the Arc prior to the Grand Prix de Paris and I still rate him the danger ahead of Manduro. I can’t see Authorized beating him for speed so hopefully Frankie will kick him on in the false straight.
This victory has been my highlight of the flat season.
Mike, you’re right about Manduro – great horse. 12F??
August 21, 2007 at 15:54 #111983I don’t actually have any of them in the 130’s but then again I’m always conservative with my ratings. I have Manuro 129, Authorized and Dylan Thomas 127.
Over twelve furlongs I doubt Manduro will beat either Authorized or Dylan Thomas. The chances are he will run a pound or two at least below his very peak and that’ll make it tough for him especially as Authorized will probably be even better over an extra couple of furlongs.
August 21, 2007 at 15:55 #111984Hi Bos,
Unless the connections of Manduro are certain he will get 12F, then I hope he doesn’t turn up for The Arc. One thing I hate is seeing great horses being beat becuase they are being asked too much.
On the otherhand, if Manduro is as effective over 12f, then it would be a mouth watering clash between the best horses in Europe don’t you think.

The list goes on and on…
Sunday 7th October…47 days and counting…

His form tells me that he shouldn’t stay. However, he hasn’t been stopping at the end of his 10F efforts and is bred to stay the trip.
It would worry me that, after 3 years, his connections haven’t tried him over 12F before. Perhaps he’s only now physically mature enough to tackle the trip.
If he stays, he’ll give everyone plenty to think about at the business end.
August 21, 2007 at 18:26 #112023For me Manduro is the horse they all have to beat in the Arc.

August 21, 2007 at 18:57 #112031made Dylan Thomas look average.
I didn’t see the race, but he beat DT by a length on ground that was completely unsuitable for DT and with DT apparently getting boxed in. That’s hardly making him look average.
Authorized has had things suit him this summer with the ground. Had the ground been decent today, I’m fairly sure we would have got a different results.August 21, 2007 at 19:21 #112033I think Dylan Thomas is better on fast ground and probably better over 12f, so I wouldn’t suggest we were seeing the same horse that won the KG.
However, Authorized looked to have the race under control today and, even if DT had his favoured conditions, it’s not obvious that he would have turned the result around.

August 21, 2007 at 19:35 #112036Great performance, that should silence the knockers all right!
August 21, 2007 at 19:44 #112037Dylan Thomas wasn’t boxed in to the extent that it made any difference he hammered the rest of the field including the reliable Notnowcato who has run to the same mark in his last four races. As for the ground probably good to soft but Dylan Thomas has run to around 125 today (on my ratings) which is a mere two pounds below his very best so he’s hardly been hugely inconvenienced by the ground.
August 21, 2007 at 20:12 #112042Clearly DT is a better horse on good ground than softer – he also ran at a distance short of his best. While the same can be said of authorized, he had his favoured ground.
Also the ground on eclipse day was better than today, which probably shows why Authorized didn’t win that day, in that he likes cut, especially over this shorter distance.
The ground will be key on Arc day.August 21, 2007 at 20:14 #112044For me Manduro is the horse they all have to beat in the Arc.

I’m with you JohnJ, Manduro is going to take all the beating

The ground will be key on Arc day.Dylan Thomas’ best two runs – behind Manduro at Royal Ascot and in winning the King George both times he ran to exactly the same mark which indicates he’s just as effective over ten furlongs as he is over twelve. Authorized’s best two runs – the Derby ground was on the quick side of good the time was over a second faster than standard, and todays – running to 126 and 127 suggesting that the ground isn’t a problem and he’s a good horse at both ten and twelve furlongs. The thing with Authorized though is he is probably still improving he is still only three and lightly raced. Back up to twelve furlongs he’s probably capable of running to higher marks still.
August 21, 2007 at 20:20 #112046Having watched the race again DT was clearly inconvenienced – he’s a galloper of a horse not a quickening type and his position did him no favours at all. If he had a clear run from further out he would have been a lot closer, perhaps have won.
As for Manduro for the Arc he’s far from a sure thing. For a horse that has plenty of natural speed to go up against the quality in depth that the race has when unproven at the distance. Even his foray into the 1m4 world before the arc is unlikely to yield any definitive answers. Should be a cracker of a race. Hopefully the ground is good so there will be no excuses for any horse.
