August 20, 2025 at 15:39 #1738379WD Mike. What a gorgeous horse
August 20, 2025 at 15:43 #1738380Well done Mike
I did back them both in the end he is sooo gorgeous, but only got 7/4.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...August 20, 2025 at 15:51 #1738382Optically, it was a farce especially considering Havlin’s comments about judging the pace and not going too far ahead – ITV are trying to sell us that this was the plan to run it like this as Ombudsman needs a horse to chase.
They hit the front too soon at Sandown so having something to chase was good but no way the plan was to have the pacemaker that far in front either.
Delacroix was mulish when half refusing to cross the course from the stables and played up a little in the stalls but he only just managed to catch the pacemaker – Japanese horse was disappointing but he pulled hard when leading the group.
Think the winner is the best horse and now they know they need to hold him up for one late run regardless of the pace – he settle fine when they let the pacemaker go so I don’t think he was actually needed.
August 20, 2025 at 16:26 #1738388Ta all.
I felt the Eclipse came too soon after Ascot for Ombudsman (sweated up beforehand and still ran well in it), so even before they declared the pacemaker I was hopeful about today.
wd winners.
August 20, 2025 at 16:33 #1738391Pacemaker was hanging all over the shop and Delacroix still only just beat him home. Race looked stupid. Do away with pacemakers please
August 20, 2025 at 16:40 #1738392Judged on recent events namely Goodwood I suspect the pacemaker’s jockey was trying to steal a march on them to actually win.
The more I know the less I understand.
August 20, 2025 at 17:22 #1738400The Japanese jockey ignored him and so none of the others wanted to be the one to go and chase the leader thus sacrificing their chances.
The sectionals show that the pacemaker’s first 4F were run to: ‘par’, ‘fast’, ‘very fast’ and ‘fast’ whilst three of the rest ran all four furlongs to ‘slow’ with Danon Decile and Daryz both running 3 of the furlongs to ‘slow’ but the second furlong to ‘par’.
All bar the pacemaker had a high Finsihing Speed % well above 100% (over 109% for the first two home) whilst the pacemaker (who ran each of the last 4F ‘very slow’) managed just 97.5%
August 21, 2025 at 13:08 #1738465I see nothing wrong with a pacemaker, this one you’d say went off too fast but still finished 3rd on merit
we hear things like to be classed as a “great” they need to be able to win on any going and any pace of raceGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
August 21, 2025 at 13:48 #1738471Pacemaker’s when applied correctly are a good idea (especially if you have a hold up horse with no confirmed front runner in a race that will end up slow and tactical) but the sectionals showed that he went off far too fast and the others realising this simply ignored him and when you gift that kind of lead to a multiple G2/G3 placed horse they are not going to come back to you as quickly as a lower grade horse would.
His last individual 4F splits were by far his slowest and all of them (barring the very last furlong that the heavily eased Daryz ran slower) had his rivals run significantly faster than him…..but given the lead he had built up he was able to hang on for 3rd place……..had he been ridden more conservatively as a pacemaker he would have finished last.
The optics of it looked horrible and I can’t believe that was what was envisaged when the tactics were discussed beforehand but bizarrely by the strict interpretation of the rules of racing, he was actually ridden to achieve the best possible position (a very rare feat for a pacemaker indeed).
That being said, I very much doubt that he will ever use those kind of tactics when dropped back into his usual grade of race in the future.
Lets also not forget the pigs ear Coolmore made of not setting a stiff enough pace for thir dual Derby winner in the Voltiguer, even though they had the complete control of the race with a pacemaker and 2nd string setting the pace. This seems to be something they are getting wrong a bit more often as of late too.
August 21, 2025 at 16:25 #1738477The optics are horrible. I wouldn’t give a fig for the form as too many totally inconvenienced by how it panned out. Ridiculous that the pacemaker is clear in third. Either do a decent job of peacemaking or just stop them being used. Yet another reason to not bet on these races as no guarantee you will get a run from your horse.
August 21, 2025 at 17:14 #1738481Get rid of pacemakers… he’d be used as a front runner in a similar style to Quickthorn
Inconvenienced? boohoo, run to your own fractions
