Who is going to 2 win? Henry Or Aidan? Who rides Await the Dawn? If Joseph rides will he be Fav? Tom is riding the mare Midday I believe.Seems odd.
August 13, 2011 at 06:47 #367906Some might say it’s strange – that some books were clippin’ ‘Cirrus’ for York yesterday in light of this:
Price Gontaut-Biron:
Cirrus Eagles face six rivals
12/08/2011 – 17:00 – Group III Sunday,
Aug. 14 in Deauville
‘Cirrus’ would have to be something serious to do both wouldn’t he?!
‘Await’ should love the track (home straight) shouldn’t he?
But wasn’t ‘St’ Nic’ knocked for having only beating up on ‘Harris Tweed’ oh and ‘Midday’!!August 13, 2011 at 15:28 #367948Would you back AtD before knowing the riding arrangements? I felt like I was cheated when an apprentice was assigned to ride SNA.After the race I knew I was.To use an apprentice in such a race as the International is a double whammy. No jockey,no allowance.
August 14, 2011 at 08:47 #367995Didn’t you feel more ‘cheated’ (if that’s the right word?) in taking a shorter price about the ‘St’ before the saga of the ‘will he won’t he run’ (that follows ‘Workfarce’ everywhere) had been played out?!
I suspect that those who took the carrot about the ‘Farce’ new that their cake was cooked when they set off at a crawl.
For what it’s worth I thought the ‘St’ ran with credit & was given a very easy ride – and by the way you said before that Jo lost the race by looking around – he didn’t not once – he had tunnel vision and the ‘St’ came up short off that pace.
I thought that it might have suited him more than the other pure stayers – as he’d not been beaten far in the Guineas – oh well! Also – ‘Re’ backers probably knew the plan (to settle a stayer out the back in a race run at crawl) – was flawed before Godolphin did!
Or else this speed machine would have no doubt been competing in the Dubai World Cup itself and not the mile and half Sheema Classic!!A lot of people probably felt cheated that horrible day…
As for taking the 11/10 or whatever his best price is… if that sort of price floats your boat – then get on!
If the horse is good enough and all that…
and one day he might just boot one home over here and there’ll be no more doubting…P.s. After what happened @ Arlington last night you might want to take a punt & double up or back it at the bigger price for the classic??
As this fellow is rated above what was sent out there isn’t he?August 14, 2011 at 10:06 #368007I have already spoken my piece about the ride by "the apprentice without an allowance" enough to add that an easy ride was what I least needed that day. I had a sevens double with Fame and Glory and ST.to fifty so I was taking my chances but at the time the "best available" was what I expected.
August 14, 2011 at 10:31 #368013you said before that Jo lost the race by looking around – he didn’t – not once – he had tunnel vision and the ‘St’ came up short off that pace.
as Joseph checked to see where Frankie was and let the race get away.
You’re right you said your piece!
Maybe the answer as to whether or not you should get on is actually in the horses name – ‘Await’ – a jockey booking!!!
August 14, 2011 at 16:35 #368055This doesn’t look a good International to me. Hope Midday turns up, she looks value against the favourite at around 3/1. So too does Twice Over at 6’s. Misty For Me, Snow Fairy and Cirrus De Wotsit look unlikely runners. Roderic is a possible outsider if not sacrificed as pacemaker. Just might improve at this trip given some give underfoot. Rio won’t stay. Zafisio and Windsor Palace not good enough.
That would make Twice Over a good each way bet at 6’s. However, just about to place my bet when saw bookmakers are offering just 2 places despite there being (at the moment) 10 runners. Not that I blame them for doing so. They must hate betting each way with a short-priced fav with just two realistic rivals in an 8+ runner race that could cut up further. Hills and Ladbrokes the only two I can see offering 3 places, but at inferior odds.
Wonder if anything stopped Await The Dawn turning up, whether Midday might go back to the Yorkshire Oaks. A very soft surface might also be against her. So not getting involved with her either (yet).
Value Is EverythingAugust 14, 2011 at 17:10 #368058Zenyah,how about using the apprentice without getting the benefit of the allowance. What are your thoughts on that?Judging by the strike rate of the Brazilian De Sousa I suppose the regular jockeys riding in England are no better than a good apprentice? Seems like Aidan believes Joseph has caught up with the journeymen already and is now "the best available".Moore kept a close eye on Nathaniel at Chester. Not so Joseph at Ascot. Different approach: different result.I will keep your advise in mind from now on.No jockey, no Ballydoyle bet.
August 14, 2011 at 17:25 #368062Andyod,
I can tell it is eating at you but for your own good mate, please forget about it.Value Is EverythingAugust 14, 2011 at 18:14 #368069Zenyah,how about using the apprentice without getting the benefit of the allowance. What are your thoughts on that?
I feel that I gave my thoughts on that Andy back on 23rd of July on your ‘time for BallyD to change policy’ thread on the horse racing forum?
Whether you agree with the jockey booking or not, if Ballydoyle are in fact going with the ‘Best available option’ policy, you have to admit, this has been overlooked for young Joseph.
The French reported the move as a decoy!
(He did ride 3 seconds 1 third & a 4th at Haydock)
Some might have sniffed out that it was a treat…More of the same today??… we’ll find out after 4.30!

I agree with you totally Andy!
Murtagh was the best jock they had for a while and they shouldn’t have let him go…
who does Hag call when he has one laid out?! – The Murtgh! The others I don’t rate…
Even De Kock was probably wishing that he had the Murght back in Dubai last Carnival – ‘cos Soumi cost him a couple of winners and me!
But I’m over that…It’s a reason why I started to take an interest in the French racing – can you blame me?? – when we have shock after shock & scandal over here…
can’t recall reading about anything of the like it on Paris Turf!Even though the worst a French jock has done of late was to put up 2lbs over in a major group1!
Then again some of us knew that there was a golden fleece up for grabs that day – with no hope of a rematch on reversed terms!
Keep posting without you there’d be even more tumble weed blowing through this ghost town!
August 14, 2011 at 20:06 #368081You are right Gingertipster, it is eating at me.Cost close to two grand. However I will do my best to let it go.And to lose weight before the next BC at Santa Anita.I am already looking forward to Halloween 2012.
August 15, 2011 at 11:38 #368121Bit Disappointing turn out. Reduced to 6 runners including three top class horses (Await The Dawn, Twice Over and Midday), one high class (Roderic O’Connor) and two no hopers. Ground will play an important part with heavy rain about. If it misses York then the Abdulla duo look tempting at current prices. If it hits the track the two Coolmore ones would look value. Have to wait.

JOB gets the ride on Await The Dawn.
JOB did not cost you two grand. You bet when the jockey was not known, you took the risk when it was very possible JOB would get the ride. Not that it "cost" you the race. St Nich wasn’t good enough. For your own good, stop blaming others Andyod and get on with retrieving your money.
Value Is EverythingAugust 15, 2011 at 13:02 #368136I hear you all. Thanks.
August 15, 2011 at 15:39 #368154I study races in Hong Kong where half the races are slowly run and I think Joseph O’Brien cost St Nicholas Abbey a shot at 2nd place, hard to say if he would’ve got there for certain. He was the last to go for his mount, but more importantly unnecessarily gave up a significant amount of ground to his rivals turning in, the last thing you should do in a sprint finish.
August 15, 2011 at 22:09 #368207On overall form Twice Over is the most likely winner of the race. The downside is that he does not always run to the best of his ability – dodgy feet? – wrong time of the year? – poor race pace? – or some other strange reason. And Tom Queally has decided to ride Midday. The upside is that he is good enough to beat this field; he ran a cracking race to just be beaten by Rip Van Winkle in this race last year; and he has beaten thirty other individual Group 1 winning horses in his career. He is no mug. I do not mind if he never wins through brilliance as long as he wins. My judgement is clouded because I like the horse, so I will put no money on him, but at 5/1 he is a good bet.
Is Await The Dawn better than Rip Van Winkle? He has a lot of potential for a four year old. By now most four year olds have established just how good they are. His race wins look good to the eye, but if his recent form is as good as he will ever be then this will be tough for him. At 5/6 you would be betting as if he already had solid Group 1 form. He has looked as if he could win this race by a good margin, but I wouldn’t want to bet on it.
Roderic O’Connor is a huge value bet at 25/1 (with four bookmakers at the moment). His good form is very good – a Classic winner, Group 1 winner in France, beaten only just over 2 lengths by Frankel over 7f. His bad form has been when he hasn’t stayed and when he wasn’t fit. Since he is not here as a pacemaker (good grief!!) then AO’B reckons he has a good chance at this 10 furlongs. He is still developing and will be OK on the going. Not the most likely winner, but a cracking bet at the price.

Not sure Tom Queally would have been given the choice what to ride, MV, and as Twice Over isn’t seen as a stud prospect, may just be in to ensure an honest pace for Midday.
Can’t see Coolmore hanging about either, as it took all day for Await The Dawn to get on top at Ascot, all of which points to the Abdullah mare being the one to benefit. -
