Forgive me if this is common knowledge but ive always wondered how does JP decide which horses get trained where?
And what is the ratio like? I always thought that Jonjo got the majority but surely he must get a bit ticked off sometimes when he sees the likes of My Tent or Yours and At Fishers Cross with other stables.
Finally ill throw a question in, if Jonjo got all JPs horses could he win the Trainers Championship? If the answer is no is that down to his training ability?
January 20, 2014 at 22:44 #465451I think Jonjo gets most of the homebreds and auction purchases.
If JP buys a horse while in training, it stays with the original trainer. The rest of the homebreds and buys get shared between other nominated trainers.
There must be some sort of selection system with the non-Jonjo ones, though, suiting the trainer’s main specialty. Nicky Henderson seems to end up with all of the speedy two-mile types and Edward O’Grady often has long-term handicap projects.
JP seems to never sell his horses out of his ownership, but does sometimes change trainer to see if a change of scene will liven one up before retirement to Martinstown. Obviously, Enda Bolger gets the Cross Country converts too.
