So back for another season and hoping to have a 4th consecutive year of profit. It’ll be the same process as previous years – selective tips in mainly stakes races. With the Cecil stable virtually defunct by the looks of things, I will be looking a lot at good old Johnny G, Marco Botti and (initially at least) Charlie Appleby who has had an amazing year on the all-weather. Contributions more than welcome of course!!!
A quick word on the jumps. I enjoyed the 4 days of the NH season and have to say I shed a tear when both Coneygree and Carruthers won. I loved dear old Lord Oaksey! But it does sadden me that it is so much about Cheltenham now. Still it was a fantastic festival and most die-hard jumps fans don’t seem to mind the lull between December and March so good luck to them I suppose.
But I obviously love the flat with it’s MONTHLY festivals and I like to start off at the WC meeting where I have had some luck in the past. I have 5 bets.
In the Gold Cup I think Brown Panther stands out. At his best he will win this doing handstands and my only worry is the draw. My guess is that he will be ridden prominently and be in a position to kick on some way out. He’ll do for me.
Sole Power was 1 of 2 stand-out sprinters last year and I like his price in the sprint. Clearly he needs all the cards to fall his way but, if they do, I think he will be too good for them.
In the Duty Free I like both Solow and Euro Charline. It is SOOO disappointing that the Tote have done away with 10 to Follow as these two would certainly both have been on my list. Solow is highly progressive and is rated very highly by her superb trainer. I know he is fav but I think he’ll take some beating. EC is a great price and again is highly regarded by Marco. She really caught my eye when she beat Kyoshi at Ascot last year and I think this trip suits her perfectly.
Finally I am surprised to see Main Sequence so big for the Classic. He is a horse transformed since going to the States and I thought he beat Flintshire fair and square last time. I really can’t understand how they make the Jap horse favourite and I think MS will definitely be there or thereabouts.
I don’t want to touch the dirt races as there are too many unknowns for me but I do like African Story in the big’un though everyone tells me this California Chrome is past the post.
Elsewhere today I think Charlie Appleby will have a double but they have been backed into sill prices so will leave alone but he has some good entries for the weekend and his strike rate is incredible at the moment.
£50ew Brown Panther – 9-2 – Gold Cup – Meydan
£35ew Sole Power – 8-1 – Sprint – Meydan
£100 win Solow – 5-2 – Duty Free – Meydan
£35ew Euro Charline – 10-1 – Duty Free – Meydan
£50ew Main Sequence – 13-2 – Turf – Meydan"this perfect mix of poetry and destruction, this glory of rhythm, power and majesty: the undisputed champion of the world!!!"
March 26, 2015 at 12:56 #867537Agree about Main Sequence. I backed him to win at the Breeders Cup and the trainer has targeted this race for some time. Backed him at 8s a few weeks ago.
March 26, 2015 at 16:22 #867583good luck with Solow mate(and the rest of your selections) i backed Solow at 7/2 e/w 1/4 odds early in the week

March 26, 2015 at 20:06 #867674Hi Nath! (And others!) I like Lady Correspondent of John Gosden’s – she won a maiden impressively last back-end and is his only entry in the Guineas. Other than that I fear another year of Ballydoyle domination………..

Good luck with this year’s thread Joni.
Is Jellicle Ball out of the 1000 Guineas now?
The last time I was looking she was still on the list but I have heard a few people say she might be more of an Oaks filly.
She allegedly clocked an exceptional last three furlongs when winning her only race.
I have had an eye on Roger Charlton’s Dubawi colt Ooty Hill as a long term prospect. He will surely make tons of improvement from his sole start and win, where he looked like time and experience would help the attractive grey to reach group company over middle distances. Sadly, Roger Charlton has released a cautious statement, opining that the horse is not going to be rushed and that he doesn’t want to fall into the trap of running in a trial and then being “forced” into going too high too soon. It was ominous that he said the horse will make a great four year old, which is no use to someone as impatient as me.
I like Ralph Beckett’s Chemical Charge as a potential smart middle distance horse this year. He’s won two from two and being by Sea The Stars I expect big improvement for time and Derby/Leger trips.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 26, 2015 at 20:50 #867705Hi Stevie – thanks mate!!! Ignore what I said about LC being his only entry – he actually has 5!!! Don’t know where I got that from!!!

March 26, 2015 at 21:01 #867813Just had a look at the video’s and they all look nice sorts Steve. I especially like Jellicle Ball the way she put her head down and raced to the line. Ooty looks a big scopey sort and I think you are right that he may be a long term prospect. Looks like he’ll appreciate cut too.

March 27, 2015 at 11:31 #868441All the best Joni
You’re thread’s always one of the things that gets me through the flat season!March 27, 2015 at 15:46 #868570Here’s Jellicle Ball for anyone who missed her debut.
I thought she was worth a speculative go at the 1000 Guineas, which is wide open barring the favourite but I can’t quite make my mind up if she’s going to have the necessary speed. Promising sort though:-

I thought she was worth a speculative go at the 1000 Guineas, which is wide open barring the favourite and 33/1 didn’t need a lot of cash thrown at it but I can’t quite make my mind up if she’s going to have the necessary speed. Promising sort though:-
http://www.chroma.premiumtv.co.uk/streaming/watch/RacingUKFlashVOD/partnerId_166/videoFileId_14457199/clipId_2447036/index.htmlShe comes right from the back, makes up a good lot of ground and was actually back on the snaff at the line. Born on Watangi Day (6th February) she’s quite an early foal and looks to my eyes that she won’t be disgraced at a mile, whether that might not be her optimum trip ultimately. The Fugue went into the Guineas with much the same profile, and question marks, but finished well enough up the order after a delay following the ill-fated Gray Pearl fatality at the start. She later lifted the Musidora in good style. I am hoping this filly will follow that path but get closer than her predecessor.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 27, 2015 at 18:58 #868655I do like early foals in the race. Trouble is I think both of the main O’Brien horses are early foals as well. I may double them up.
March 28, 2015 at 13:32 #869487The perfect start and went exactly how I had hoped. Great ride from Richard but easily the best horse.

Brown Panther seems best early season Joni, normally by time Royal Ascot rolls around I start getting concerned for him.
I used to love the 2 milers on the Flat when I first started out and anything trained by Guy Harwood at that sort of trip in particular but I tend not to follow them so much these days. Great start to proceedings.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 28, 2015 at 14:35 #869539Bang Bang!!! What a ride from Hughesie!!!! What a price too!
