Was at Newmarket to see the great Dawn Approach. Happened to go into the Museum shop and learned that John Penney, the former TV commentator, had recently passed away. Haven’t read any Forum tributes to him. His was a voice I much heard in my formative years following racing. He was always accurate, had gravitas, and was always unflappable. Happy memories.
Oh no I hadn’t heard that either what sad news. Like many people I got into the sport by watching the ITV7 and regularly enjoyed hearing John Penney’s voice along with Graham Goode and Raleigh Gilbert. My comiserations to his family RIP.
Sorry to hear of his passing too. As a youngster I wasn`t keen on his voice/ accent/timbre? to start but soon came round to thinking he was very good and was my favourite caller of the ITV/C4 teams
