I have a question.
How does John Francome get away with advising people to back Racing Demon in the King George at 20/1, as he did in his column today?
Someone on here highlighted it’s chance the other day (sorry I can’t find the post) and it was best priced 16/1 then. The horse is now 12/1 generally, as low as 10/1 with some, and as big as 14/1 with just ONE bookmaker.
Now I know Francome claims to not know much about computers, and if this is true, I’m certain there would have been other ways to check the price before submitting his column.
I just think it’s very poor, that a racing pundit, can advise a horse in a national newspaper (read by many low budget punters like myself) at odds that are plucked from cuckoo land. Was 20/1 available at any stage?

December 1, 2007 at 13:20 #128128on the subject of John Francome I’m a bit annoyed [as a greyhound lover] that. on a day when the first race is the Greyhounds Make Great Pets Novices Hurdle [they do] he tells everyome on national television of how many of them go on to kill the family cat if not muzzled….I know he pointed out that it only happens if you take the muzzle off too quickly …..the fact that the race was won by a horse that I followed last year and didn’t back today makes it even worse….
December 1, 2007 at 13:20 #128129B*gger the price, how the hell does he get away with advising people to back Racing Demon?
By the way Mikky, hate to be a party pooper but you’re clearly not a writer of any description at all. I’ve seen countless grammatical mistakes from yourself over the past week, but this really shows you up.
Someone on here highlighted it’s chance the other day
It’s = it is.
Therefore, someone on here highlighted it is chance the other day.
The word you’re looking for is ‘its’.
Wow,Is that the best you can do? Highlight a grammatical mistake? God, I really would love to know what some of you guys do for a hobby!
Have I claimed to be a writer of any description?
I’m really am baffled. The only writing I do is submit a few football articles to Betfair – it’s not a living, it’s nothing serious, just a hobby and a bit of fun. I’m sure if the person receives my articals doesn’t think I’m up to it grammatically then he would tell me.
As for making grammatical errors on a forum – well again I’m baffled. When you see forum posts with people writing ‘wot do u do’, then I am amazed that you decide to highlight a comma that shouldn’t have been there to ‘really show me up’.
Anyway, in now way am I shown up, because I don’t read back what I have written most times, and if there is a grammatical error, then who cares?

December 1, 2007 at 13:35 #128131Harsh TC – If we start examining the grammatical accuracy of all posts on the forum then I’m afraid most of us are in trouble.

December 1, 2007 at 13:47 #128137Anyway,
Has anyone got an opinion as to how Francome can advise a horse at 20/1 when the best price available is 14/1 (12 & 10’s generally)?
I have however, noticed that he said "about 20/1" – but does that make any difference? I should ask him to lend me £20 and I will give him ‘about £20’ back – meaning I will give him £10 or £12

December 1, 2007 at 13:55 #128143While TC was harsh on you MM I would say that you’re being a tad harsh on JF. I think the fact he said ‘about 20/1’ suggested that he wasn’t sure of the price. If one of their ‘ring’ (for want of a better word) people were to make the error then, yes, they deserve the brickbat but JF isn’t employed to provide accurate, up to date prices.
December 1, 2007 at 13:56 #128144‘By the way Mikky, hate to be a party pooper but you’re clearly not a writer of any description at all. I’ve seen countless grammatical mistakes from yourself over the past week, but this really shows you up.’
Surely the end of this sentence requires a colon of some description? Sort it out Triple Crown.

Yes he is. If he’s writing a column and being paid to do so, the least he could do in ensure he has got his facts right.

I take your point David, in the fact that his little ante-post betting advice is not really what his article is about. It’s just a little footnote if you like.
But I also agree with DJ that if you are going to mention these things, then surely he has to get the correct price, especially as he talks about the horse being a ‘knocking each way bet’ at the price. It may be a knocking each way bet at about 20/1, but it’s a less knocking each way bet at 10/1 and 12/1.
If the horse does win the King George, you can rest assured that the newspaper in question will carry quite a big banner telling all its readers about the 20/1 advised back in early December – with no mention of the ‘about 20/1’ actually quoted, or the fact that the best price on the day of the advice was only 14/1.

TC, as you seem to be infested with pedantry please re-visit your post. Surely you meant to say ‘I hate to be a party pooper’ – you should not be so informal when playing the pedant and I think your paragraph would be better served with a ‘:’ instead of a ‘.’

OK – you’ve got me – I admit defeat on this one.
December 1, 2007 at 15:30 #128173How old are you TC? When do you start secondary school? Bet you really stir it up in the playground at break…….
MM can claim what he likes IMO I couldn’t care less. I claim I’m slim but my wife claims I’m fat but she doesn’t keep banging on about it and tell me off when I’m raiding the biscuit tin….December 1, 2007 at 15:33 #128175Wow.
One problem though.
I don’t claim to be a writer.
MikkyMo does.
Where do I claim to be a writer? Anyway, that’s besides the point. If I claim to ba writer then that’s because I am – as a hobby, because I love football and because it passes time.
But does that mean if I write as a hobby away from this forum then that I have to be 100% grammatically correct when contributing to a forum?
I cud right like this if a wanted to cos corm dosent av a rule that any1 who rites away from this site has to be 100% grammar correct on a forum.
I won’t say anything else on the subject, other than to say that I apologise if you don’t like the fact that I make mistakes on a forum. If you have read any of my articles, and spotted errors then please leave a comment as I am learning, without taking it too seriously. Beleive me, I’ve spotted many mistakes that I’ve made and I am my own worst critic.
Take care,
Mike
December 1, 2007 at 16:30 #128200Actually TC, we could do with more teachers like you
and we could all live in a more literate society
What’s your maths like?December 1, 2007 at 16:46 #128204I thought this thread was headed John Francome, in which case I was interested as he’s second only to Jose Mourinho in the fanciable mature man stakes in my book.
As I continued to read I realised the title isn’t really indicative of the contents, pity!! - AuthorPosts
