He said "If they ran straight for another 100 yards the result would be the exact same"
Is it just me or is that a rather bizzare statement to make. Given that it was near a dead heat surely nobody could possibly say what the result would have been in another 100 yards…. Its anyones guess surely…
I think Jim was even a bit taken back by it….
May 2, 2010 at 14:57 #293568It’s an opinion, no more no less, and you could ask quite a few knowledgeable people on here and they might hold the same or different views on the result. Since he’s a jockey of much experience I’d place as much weight on John FRANCOME’s opinion as any.

You could be right, im not having a go at him. I just find it strange that somebody could be so certain of how a result would finish with another 100 yards considering how close the actual finish was.
But he has ridden in 1000’s of finishes so perhaps best not to question his opinion.
I just found it a strange air of confidence thats all
May 2, 2010 at 15:00 #293570Francome does not seem to know the rules, as Jim McGrath seemed to point out by showing him the rule book.

Special Duty had 8 furlongs to win the race and why should 100 yards determine the result, race is run over 8 furlongs not 100 yards.

She was beaten a nose having been carried badly right handed.
Question is – if she’d been able to run in a straight line would she have won the race?
IMO she would have
May 2, 2010 at 15:09 #293581The most amusing aspect of the exchange between JF and JM was the fact that Jim clearly disagreed with JF’s statement but couldn’t bring himself to actually contradict him outright on air … so decided to wave the rule book at him instead by way of justification.
Come on Jim, grow a pair and say what you think
May 2, 2010 at 15:11 #293586The moment they passed the line I said that the winner loses it in the stewards room. I too was taken aback that JF didn’t see that the winner took enough ground from the 2nd to
potentially
effect the result.
No-one can know 100%, it’s just a best judgement call. Logically, you HAVE to conclude that the winner took enough momentum from the 2nd to stop her from winning. Queally didn’t help neither.May 2, 2010 at 15:19 #293596It is hard to argue against the reversal but I can also see where Francome’s opinion is coming from. Jacqueline Quest was finding for pressure and it was not as if Special Duty had produced a dramatic change of pace which would have seen her sail past. Had they stayed straight I don’t think there would have been much in it either way.

I thnik the stewards made the right call.
Special Duty was slightly in front when interfered with, interference although not intentional did cost it at least the loosing distance at the line.
Just found Francombes comments remarkable thats all
May 2, 2010 at 15:31 #293609I agree with Joncol. Poor show by Francome. Far too aggressive in voicing his opinion on the matter and lacking a touch of humility in failing to show any respect for Jimbo’s opinion.
The fact is Francome, whatever your stuck-up-your-own- backside opinion is worth you, yes you, called it wrong. The stewards called it fairly. As the winning jockey said, "I was just coming to win the race when my horse was struck into."
You may have been "the greatest jockey" but that doesn’t entitle you to dismiss other people’s opinions as arrogantly as you do. Personally, I’ve always found you to be a big-head and somewhat unsavoury character.May 2, 2010 at 15:43 #293625Hmm, a little bit strong Ken … it’s true that JF can be somewhat of an acquired taste … in common with many other people I’ve met in my life that possess an extraordinary self confidence, there is sometimes a fine line between that self confidence and arrogance … occasionally with JF it seems to spill over into slightly dismissive categorical statements against anyone that maybe hasn’t ridden professionally.
He was exactly the same I recall when the C4 were strongly debating the for and against argument surrounding the use of the whip.
I find this in football as well where, unless you’ve had professional involvement, your opinion is often dismissed as irrelevant by certain characters within the game.

But "unsavoury character" Ken, that’s a bit strong.
Francome is the go to man for any jockeyship comments on C4. I don’t think C4 would encourage arguement between the two paddock judges.

I"m a big fan of Johnny Francome, but today he was as wrong as i have ever heard him,on more than one occassion!
May 2, 2010 at 15:47 #293631Francome was the only pundit on either RUK or C4 who didn’t feel that the stewards made the right decision. His opinion illustrated his lack of interest in and knowledge of the rule book, which McGrath flapped in front of him.Francome’s statement that they wouldn’t amend the result even in France was plainly nonsense.
SD was beaten an inch after being carried across the track by JQ, whose rider chose to pull the stick through and use it in the "wrong" hand. Amended result and 3 days for careless for Queally seemed about right.
Felt terribly sorry for connections of JQ. The post race congratulations and interviews seemed horribly premature and liable to end in tears.
Shame that (a)consistency isn’t shown by stewards in the UK on a daily basis and (b) the race was a nonsense due to draw bias- those not on the stands side may as well stayed at home

Jimbo sits on the fence far too often and when there is a controversial moment he is quick to put it to John to drop himself in it!

Oh, okay then, I’m just jealous of that mop of curly hair.
As for Jimbo, he reminds me of that kid at school who would always run to the teacher, saying, "Please Miss, Ken’s been trying to kiss the girls again and he’s pinching their bottoms." You know the type.
