I think Steve Cauthen was the best of all of them btw.

Better than Carson, Pat Eddery, even Lester Piggott.

Tactical genius with a clock in his head and very strong in the finish.

But is all down to opinions.

Technically, though I must confess I had forgotten Bahri was trained at Arundel, not West Ilsley.

Hern was a master tactician – it was he who arranged for Bustino to have multiple pacemakers when taking on Grundy – and I am sure Carson learned plenty off him.

I have just read this interesting thread and must have missed it. I remember when Carson started riding as an apprentice ( I suppose he must have been ) Is he a Scot or was he riding a lot in Scotland. Anyway I remember a scottish connection.

He was getting 100/8 and 20/1 winners and I started noticing him. I would never back just a Jockey, but I did notice his early talent and would look out for him. I liked him, and he used to call his trainer Sir or something so was deferential which was more the norm in those days. These days they don’t seem to think twice about sleeping with the trainer’s wife !

gamble, Willie Carson was born in Stirling, so a fully fledged Scot. Started his career as an apprentice in Yorkshire.

Not particularly relevant, but one of those bits of trivia that always sticks with me is that his first winner was Pinker’s Pond at Catterick in 1962.

I did take note of his opinion that Nashwan was the best he had ridden and backed him for the Derby, but otherwise I’ll have the pork pie please.
