What a great race
Nice 14/1 ante post winner for me there, strange as I’d completely given up on him haha
He travelled like a serious horse and for the first time in his life battled up the hill
Gordon elliot is some trainer to get him back to his best
March 12, 2020 at 13:54 #1485720Remember when they both came down at the 3rd last hurdle at Punchestown just as the race was boiling up into an absolute belter? Two years is a long time to wait for a finish but it was worth it.
March 12, 2020 at 13:55 #1485721Wow! What a race. Three top class horses transferring their hurdles form to fences. Don’t know how much the mistakes cost Faugheen, but imo probably made the difference between winning and third… That said, we knew he isn’t the best of jumpers over fences anyway, so Faugheen mistakes were itself a probability beforehand. Melon has seemed to down tools in the past and doesn’t win very often, but did nothing wrong today; enjoying it in front. Samcro has been a weak finisher of late, but his latest wind op’ has made a big difference. Hope his breathing remains ok and can fulfil all his potential next year. Shame my main bet Itchy Feet fell, but seemed aniss even before falling. Brits not good enough to get involved.
Value Is EverythingMarch 12, 2020 at 14:00 #1485722Another fresh horse or one who had an easy race last time wins a race at the festival this year
Samcro, shiskin, champ, dame de compagnie, epatante, envoi Allen, put the kettle on, politologue just off the top of my head

We know Townend is no Ruby Walsh. Get over it.Value Is EverythingMarch 12, 2020 at 14:10 #1485727To be fair to townend
Mullins quality of horses this year is much lower than it has been
Ruby used to ride 4 or 5 steering jobs some festivals
And townend gave ferny hollow a great ride
Faugheen lost today because of his jumping not because of the jockey
March 12, 2020 at 14:36 #1485739One of Ruby Walsh’s greatest assets was putting them in the right position at fences though, FF. Impossible to know whether mistakes made by the horses could’ve been put right by Ruby. However, seems to me Mullins horses in general haven’t been jumping with the same accuracy since Ruby left.
I agree Mullins doesn’t have the number of good horses he’s had in previous years. Best of them got a stone bruise and couldn’t run and some (Allaho) in the wrong race (probably because they were protecting Faugheen). Be interesting to see what happens to Min.
Value Is EverythingMarch 12, 2020 at 20:57 #1485838Mullins got a whip ban for his ride on Melon. Maybe I am talking through my pocket as a Samcro backer but that makes me even more pleased Samcro hung on. I never think it is satisfactory when a jockey breaks the rules and wins.
Whether or not the rules are correct is another question altogether!
March 12, 2020 at 21:08 #1485841Agree cork
I backed Ms parfois when Mullins flogged rathviden on his way to beating her a half length
A ride he was then banned for but farcically given ride of the year for
March 12, 2020 at 21:32 #1485848Must be tough to ride within the rules sometimes though.
Based on times etc, how is the ground riding today…or will it ride tomorrow?

March 12, 2020 at 21:40 #1485850Yes, I remember that FF. I also remember a running of the Kim Muir when I backed Pendra who finished second under Derek O’Connor, defeated by a jockey who went on a whipping frenzy on her horse. I am not squeamish and I also like to think I am not a bad loser but rules are rules and it was galling to be done out of what would have been a really big win by a jockey who absolutely flouted the rules.
March 13, 2020 at 09:58 #1485912Couldn’t believe someone on here thought it was a bad race prior to it. It looked one of the most, if not most fascinating races of the Festival (a dual Champion Hurdle runner up one of the outsiders) and so it proved.
A great round of jumping from Samcro apart from the second last (jockey error) and a well deserved victory.
Biased from backing Samcro but if he’d lost the race on the nod instead of winning it I would have had no quibble with him not getting the race just because the jockey of the second broke the whip rules. -
