We have a history of empire, as the winners. Thing is, people who don’t but suffered under it, tend not to believe the publicity about ourselves and our institutions, etc, that we do so enthusiastically.

The Derby isn’t, I believe, considered by other countries to have the same cachet as it does to us; and in fact, it’s a bit down the pecking order now, I believe.

Still, generally-speaking, the Irish are gents and, as an Irish gent-gent, Mr Bolger would have been trying to be as polite as he could, whatever his real reasons might have been. That would be my reading of it.

Is that why Aiden / Coolmore threw eight horses at the race last season Grimes?
May be if they really wanted to win they’d run sixteen.

The English Derby is still the three year old race all owners, trainers, jockeys and breeders want to win most.

Please – the Derby is the one they all want to win. Even I have ambitions to run an Australian horse in the race. However, issue with hemispheres and difference in birthdays may cause problems.

You would almost be set up for life if you win the Derby. Every "Derby" across the globe has enormous sentimental value, and winning the original is beyond even that.

I’ll go with the Epsom crowd and possibility of no lead pony for NA as the reasons behind his absence in the race.

I cant believe anyone seriously believes that Bolger doesn’t want to win the Derby. He was eager enough to win it when he was after the triple crown with Teofilo. Everyone wants to win the Derby end of.

Grimes your argument is the most barmy I’ve seen in a long while mate. As has already been said Aiden O’Brien chucks half of his crop at the Derby and he has won it more than once.

There’s something behind Bolgers decision I don’t know what but again as has been said when a trainer turns to another option it generally means he doesn’t fancy his chances.

Whether New Approach has been working like a miler or he looks unbalanced or whatever I don’t know but there is something behind it that is telling Bolger that his charge wont win the Derby.

The vibes over the winter haven’t been as I expected regarding New Approach. I expected to see him harden in the ante post market, I expected bullish noises coming from out of Ireland but it hasn’t really happened has it, only to a limited extent? The form of Jim Bolger’s horses is a concern as well they are not exactly taking all before them.

Aiden O’Brien on the other hand after a stuttery start has had noteable wins at the weekend with Yeats and Duke Of Marmalade, I wouldn’t be as worried about his string though with three year olds it often pays to be a little cautious at this time of the year as O’Brien is capable of improving them hugely.

New Approach for the Guineas? Well on two year old form he’s hard to get away from but I dunno, there doesn’t seem the amount of confidence behind him that I would’ve expected.

As for the Derby he wouldn’t beat Twice Over anyway.

I wonder if it has something to do with the new owners not wanting to provide galileo with his 1st epsom derby winner???

Sheikh Mohammed (and associates) though I detest his Godolphin organisation the one thing I will say for them is they love the Derby and would dearly love to have a Derby winner in whatever guise.

    This is a Bolger "thing".

Thank you for changing that pic (at long last) Flash :D

Grimes. Simply cannot have that at all. We do overrate many of our sporting events ( i wonder how many people worldwide really do watch the Grand National) but not this one

I still think that the issue here is Epsom, but (and this is a genuine question) would there really be any harm done to stud values if this was admitted to be the reak factor?

I’m sure it has a lot to do with Epsom, Clivex. It was what I read. But if you lads think the Derby ranks more highly than the Arc, I think it’s you who are living in a fantasy world in this matter.

As for Godolphin’s love of the Derby, well, part of the reason, though doubtless not the whole reason, could be the quite strong antipathy that seems to exist between them and Coolmore, who are so much a part of the Irish flat-racing set up. Do they have many runners in the Irish Classics? Do they mix socially at all the meetings? Do any of the leading lights? Although, I realise this is speculative.

My take is that New Approach is like his uncle, Black Sam Bellamy, the size of a chaser and thus he would stand a chance of getting wrecked running over the epsom track, hence Bolger;s descion.

Would that be the same Black Sam Bellamy whose full brother Galileo won both Epsom and Irish Derbys?

Physically Galileo and Black Sam Bellamy were chalk and cheese.

He wasn’t the size of a chaser when he was a three year old.

I found it rather ironic that Jim Bolger took exactly the same 2-y-o route as Teofilo had one year earlier with a colt named New Approach!

I’m very surprised by this whole schedule; I thought New Approach had Derby (or middle-distance at least) written all over him. Having backed him for the Guineas a while ago I’ve subsequently layed the stake off as I think 1m will be too sharp for him to produce his best amongst speedier horses who have trained on, so I find the decision to take on the Irish Guineas instead of the Epsom Derby a strange one. The only reason I can think of, on top of a couple of suggestions already here which seem viable, is his new owners looking more at stud value and wanting 8f credentials rather than 12f.

I saw Black Sam Bellamy at four at the curragh, he was huge and solid,Adain Obrian looked like a hobbit next too him he looked more like a a chaser or a medium weight hunter than a flat racer, on the same trip i saw his dam at the Irish national stud, she wasnt all that big too my mind, but other daughter All Too Beautiful (full sister too Galileo and Black Sam Bellamy) was tall, while their mares grade one winning daughter of Giants Causeway was abit of a pony.

New Appoach looks tall this ear but rather unfurnished, i have a feeling he will be vunerbale too be gunned down by a fast closer…
