Last year, one of my greatest enjoyments when reading RP Online was the previews of the major races that James Willoughby delivered.

    Now … I don’t see them anymore.

Did his role change? Does he solely do work for the paper now?

The amount of newspaper material reaching the website seems to be decreasing by the day, though I don’t see that as being a huge problem as much of the (journalistic) content is pretty appalling.

Yes as LetsGetRacing said: it’s just because they put fewer articles on the web nowadays, Willoughby’s work hasn’t decreased. Also The Trading Post and The Tips Box-thing only appear after 12 (it used to be 10).

I’m not suprised as I used to be amazed by how much they let you read for free on the web.

I think the journalistic content is brilliant… but then, Willoughby is probably my favourite RP journalist while I can’t stand Clement Freud’s column, so I seem to value different things to the majority of readers!

Oh – so what I was reading on RP Online is in fact what they post in the papers that day? Makes sense now.

All this brilliant content for free, I was wondering how RP were keeping themselves afloat. Now it’s understandable that they cut back on the free content online.

I read the Irish 2,000 Guineas preview and was gobsmacked as it barely covered a thing. Well … now I understand why, too!

NRWA, I’m surprised at your critique of the relative literary merits of mssrs’ Freud and Willo.

As a writer, let’s say that the latter is an excellent analyst. He has his weaknesses. He tends to labour a point like a drunken obsessive on the pull at the disco, he can’t resist demonstrating to the hapless reader how clever he is, and you can spot one of his metaphors coming about a week before he’s written it. To name but three.

I can scarcely remember an article he’s produced that I’ve made it through to a finish. Thank God he can do speed ratings and that.

The former has no equal as a writer working in the field of horse racing. His piece today – on Emily Davidson, the horse botherer and allegedly suicidal suffragette – is the best piece of writing I’ve read in the Post this year. Flawless.

Despite having only a passing interest in the subject of Edwardian women’s liberation, I feasted on every word. He could for write trade journals and make them readable.

    Imo of course. :D

Agree entirely on Sir Clement – apparently a nightmare in real life, but then I’ve never met him, so I’ll just content myself with his wonderful pieces such as today’s.

I’ve no idea whether he was at Cartmel tonight to watch his Santa Subito run like a drain, but doubtless another world-weary yet spot-on piece on the travails of training – pausing only to observe his former charge Orpen Wide going in yet again two races later – will follow.
