itv bosses are happy with how the racing is doing on itv and itv4 but they are not happy with how the morning show is going.
itv racing bosses say it is unlikely that more meetings will be shown on itv due to competition from other channels and will focus on getting itv4 viewing figures up to where they were on channel 4 and having cross promotion with other itv shows.
It seems when they put racing on itv it does fine but when it is on itv4 people are not following the change of channel.
itv’s only downer during the year was a 6% drop in coverage of the grand national which they blame on hot weather.
November 20, 2017 at 18:51 #1327817Perhaps if they all got up earlier and put The Morning Show on between 8.00am and 9.00am it might get more viewers.
I can never watch it on days when I’m off to the races and in the Winter most folk who are going racing have to be at the Course around 11.00am just half an hour after The Morning Show finishes.
Note to ITV bosses.…
Get Oli and Matt out of their beds early and move The Morning Show back to 8.00am and watch the viewing figures soar..
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...November 20, 2017 at 19:15 #1327820I think the feature programme has improved and now superior to that which preceded it on Channel 4.
However, I haven’t watched a full Opening Show. It’s too late and not informative enough to put other horse racing study to one side for an hour.Banter isn’t everything
November 20, 2017 at 19:37 #1327829My problem with the Opening Show is that I’m not sure who it is aimed at. The main racing show balances catering for the newbies with the more seasoned racing fans really well, but TOS isn’t aired early enough or in enough depth to appeal to a seasoned racing fan nor does it offer what I imagine a newer racing fan would want.
November 20, 2017 at 23:09 #1327850Have the bosses at ITV considered the poor picture quality of ITV 4 a factor that his preventing many watching it? Although it is broadcast in HD most lower priced packages only show the channel in SD. I deliberately upgraded by Virgin Box so I could receive it, but I have heard comments on this and other forums about the poor picture when it is not on the main ITV channel.
November 20, 2017 at 23:25 #1327851Some good points above regarding The Opening Show and who to aim it at and there is definitely too much inane banter between the presenters and their tipping is atrocious.
The show needs a special guest from the racing world each week, a trainer, jockey or an owner of one of the fancied horses running that day. More talk of the races that they are televising with a couple of trainer interviews on the videocam.
I really enjoyed the Dark Horses feature that Channel 4 ran where trainers talked through their up coming runners and pinpointed one that might run well in the future
More guests and more in depth looks at the horse’s running that day and possibly regular updates on Thistlecrack, Coneygree and Altior and any horse that is coming back from injury or an operation.
A visit to a top stable like John Gosden’s or Ballydoyle out of season would fire up the interest of flat racing fans and possibly keep them tuning in and planning ahead for the Classics next season.
The 8.00 start for The Opening Show is crucial though and I always start recording it for 15 minutes then start watching at say 8.15 then fast forward all the adverts.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...November 21, 2017 at 11:30 #1327883Completely agree about the time of TOS. I usually record it and if I have time/can be bothered watch it later just before the main prog. But I have already struck my bets by then. 8.00 would be perfect for me. I also stopped watching TML on C4 when they shifted it to 9.00 from 8.00.
