It is far better when Oli is the lead presenter you dont get all that dross that Ed gives out.

Had to reach for the mute switch early today, after Hoiles started massacring “Jurancon” earlier on.

Definitely not a fan of this excessive “chatting” during a race, takes away from the enjoyment of the race.

Another example of trying to do something different when it’s not needed, just annoying.

....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.

I don’t actually mind it as long as there is a gap in the race for it.

I don’t particularly like the chatting in a race but it is nothing new. In the halcyon days of Channel 4 Racing, Graham Goode would often hand over to John Oaksey and John Francome for their thoughts.

I suppose it depends who the commentator is, I know Messrs O’Sullevan & Bromley quite rightly wouldn’t entertain it. I’m not a fan, if something happens during the race it’s not ideal if the commentator isn’t commentating at the time.

It is better Ruby is in the commentary box much preferred than switching to those on their podiums. Not sure it would work with anyone else though Ruby always tends to talk sense.

Ruby is an excellent analyst. ITV’s biggest problems are that they don’t have any good commentators and their presenters are mediocre at best.

But non-purists/anoraks won’t care about this. We aren’t the target audience.

You can have the in race chat as long as it is not towards the business end of the race.

As previously mentioned, CH4 with Oaksey/Francome used to do it regularly but it was always at a point where there was a natural lull in the race (at Kempton it was often between the last fence going away from the stands around to the first fence down the side and at Sandown it was often after they jumped the last on the first circuit all the way down to the first fence as they turned down the back and sometimes extended to just before the Railway Fences).

I like Ruby as he isn’t shy of voicing a comment (outside of when he is asked about Mullins horses, where he is more tight lipped/non-committal) and his analysts from the booth section to me is always very informative (maybe not quite so much to the more experienced fans of the sport but certainly for newer viewers). He is so much more watchable than Mick Fitz and AP imho.

Can’t agree that there is ever a suitable gap or lull in a horse race (unless a whole line of obstacles have been omitted).

It doesn’t happen during the flat season, so why is it tolerated for N.H? Must be the assumed limited attention span of the casual viewers.

Irrespective of individual viewpoints, to have an ongoing discussion as the field jump the final fence, as happened today, is surely pushing it a bit too far.

....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.

“Pushing it a bit too far”

Maybe we should get the ITV team on some of the blatant non-triers.

    😉

I agree one race was spoiled as they decided to have a discussion approaching the last which was unusual.

Anyone would be more watchable than Mick “Never Seen A Bad Ride” Fitzgerald and Misery McCoy. Both of them are stealing a living from the game now.
