They do sometimes refer to his role with Joseph O’Brien and I’m sure they have also mentioned his success in breeding a group winner from a cheaply bought mare that he chose using his knowledge of pedigrees.

How many times do they have to mention who somebody is?!

Some casual watchers must wonder who Luke Harvey is? (not having a go ay Luke harvey by the way)

I have to say one thing ITV (sometimes) get right is they interview the stable hands. If they want “the human touch” it’s much better to interview someone involved with the horses than some nobber downing pints (at the usual festival) or reading out messages from Twitter.

Talking about reading out messages from twitter, new low on The Opening Show this morning. Do they not understand bullying?

Ian’s watching the Racing on TV advice Part 2.

Part 1 stressed the importance of watching ITV Racing on mute.

Part 2 stresses the importance of not watching The Opening Show at all.

I’m only a chancer. If I didn’t have The Opening Show to watch at 9.30, after waking at 7.30, I’d be on the beers from the off. It’s like Cheltenham methadone.

And ITV is a satellite feed for me, so a few seconds faster than my RTV stream which drops in quality on my rural connection. Plus it’d mean sitting in front of a computer rather than in front of the TV.

Fair enough, sir – at least you’ve got a rationale for it!

Ms. Or maybe Miss if the chivalry of the owner’s register is anything to go by.

usually like Matt Chapman, but his interviews with Brain Cooper and David Mullins were a bit crass. Wasn’t the time to refer to Cooper’s stalled career and Mullins’ father being jocked off Dawn Run

That “GB 4 – Rachael Blackmore 5” stat was quite amusing, if you’re from this side of the ditch.

Maybe I made too much of it this morning.

Matt Chapman read a tweet from someone who wanted to know if Kevin Blake, who was sitting at home wearing a jacket and tie, was also just wearing shorts (yawn). Kevin said he was wearing trousers. They then badgered him to stand up, which for whatever reason he did not want to do. Kevin did not seem to appreciate the badgering.

I just found it all a bit uncomfortable.

Blake consistently makes Chappers and the rest look clueless. I remember a lengthly segment with them all waxing lyrical about Getabird being bombproof in the Supreme, a monster, a machine, will be on the snaff, and all the usual guff. Blake neatly summarised at the end of it in, about 10 seconds, that going left-handed was a concern. The horse was duly turned over.

I’ve given his comments every respect ever since then.

Well if anyone wondered what Blake brought to the programme they will know after yesterday.

    Three winners from three tips.

As stated ad nauseum, I watch on mute and my ears are spared all this, even Kevin Blake – I can find winners by myself, cheers.

All I would say as a general comment is that people who seek a career in the public eye, be it on TV or any other platform, and whether they admit it to themselves or not, aren’t just in it for the money (which isn’t actually as great as some imagine it to be).

It feeds their narcissism – that’s why many of them can’t handle the social media flak (which frankly goes with the territory in their profession) they sometimes get as they want everyone to unconditionally love them as much as they unconditionally love themselves.

That said, a racing team will have people who come at it from different angles.

Ruby Walsh, Tony McCoy and Luke Harvey are simply getting a reduced (though maybe not for Luke!) income after hanging up their boots, Alice Plunkett and Francesca Cumani are equestrians, Kevin Blake is a form book anorak.

    And then there’s Matt Chapman.

I don’t know him well, and I have no strong views in terms of liking or disliking him either way, but he is an uber narcissist born to be on TV and he is actually more robust than all of them put together.

He literally does not care what any individual thinks of him – he’s decided to be the 21st century John McCririck, only with a deeper understanding of the form book when needed.

He used to go on the Racing Post’s Facebook and make a point of liking or loving every disparaging remark written about him.

He’s “out there,” he just doesn’t care, but he’s also willing to make himself unpopular with owners, trainers and jockeys in a way others wouldn’t dare, and that’s his strength.

His stage act is bloody repetitive – they all become caricatures of themselves in the end – but he’s the best operator on that programme by a country mile.

I still have him on mute, though!
