Is Oily the biggest dimwit to set foot on a racecourse? Today he actually believed that Murphy was executing some sort of tactic in dropping his rein. The other day he thought it was good idea to try on a woman’s hat. It is painfully obvious that only the name has got him a job. You can see him twenty years on and he would still have the gravitas of a giggling child.
May 19, 2017 at 21:04 #1301463Before the Dante they had ample opportunity to show us every runner in the paddock. No, they just couldn’t do it could they; silly snippets and commentaries instead. I thought they were doing well initially but we are slipping back into Channel 4 mode. Will we see all the runners before the Derby? I sincerely hope so. Incidentally they never replied to my complaints about them constantly changing programme titles.
June 2, 2017 at 21:18 #1303096Hayley Turner had a bit of a mare before the oaks. He this and he that when talking about the horses in the lineup. 2 different horses got the “he” treatment.
June 3, 2017 at 00:52 #1303149Still not seeing enough of the horses, I only got a chance to get a look at Rhododendron when she was in the parade before going down. It was the only chance I got to see her apart from at the post and didn’t think she looked too happy in the pouring ran with thunder and lightning rattling overhead.
As King Sprinter said above Hayley was calling all the fillies ‘he’ as they went into the starting stalls for The Oaks which was really annoying.
You could have almost have been fooled into believing that you had tuned into ‘Royal Ascot’ today, it was Ladies Day at Epsom and a lot of time was given over to discussing where outfits had been purchased etc etc. AND ..why do we have to keep seeing Ed Chamberlin, Olly and Jason standing in the centre of the paddock talking about the race when the horses are circling around them, we don’t need to see THEM, we want to see the HORSES and they can keep talking all they like… just show the horses!!!!

Yup, I made a post about this, yesterday, maybe I hit the wrong button. They were on air for half an hour before the first race. Apart from at the stalls, the only horses we got a squint at were O’Briens late arrivals, that could have been shown any time, and the utterly embarrassing loud Chapman and the daft Gleeson on fairground steeds. Talk about self-indulgence. Opinion: Olly Bell is the only one worth his corn.
June 3, 2017 at 11:15 #1303228I’m not sure about them standing in the centre of the paddock; I wasn’t sure from the first meeting at Cheltenham, when they got a good soaking, and I just don’t think it works. However, they obviously think it does – so there.

I was astonished at that too. Should be easy enough to get right in the Oaks of all races!
June 3, 2017 at 13:10 #1303256Yes; that really annoyed me too yesterday….
June 3, 2017 at 14:06 #1303271Not sure what McCoy is doing there on Derby day..
June 3, 2017 at 16:15 #1303298Arrgh…..!!! No horses just awkward retired jocks in morning dress.
Still no horses, they are walking round the paddock but all we see are presenters. Appalling, you used to see more on Pathe news reels. Bloody Willie now….June 3, 2017 at 19:39 #1303361How any thinks this is better than CH4 is beyond me.
Yes there was a lovely feature on Walter Swinburn but that was the best of it,why was there fashion coverage on Derby day??.
They spent more time on that than showing horses in the paddock and they took 90mins to show the Queen arriving, that should have been at the start of the show just like CH4 always did.
Does anyone know if they are not allowed to show much of the horses in the paddock to boost RUK?
I’m lucky to have RUK so why I was watching the dumbed down channel I don’t know
June 3, 2017 at 19:41 #1303362As for AOB, heis like that all of the time. I partly think it is a stunt, playing the awkward choir boy . Ridiculous, I doubt he is like that when “the lads” are brining in new investors on board and they want to talk to the big man himself. Frankly, his obsession with the phone at a time that he damn well knows that the press and tv people want to talk to him is ridiculous. Ignorant even. Surprised no one from the media has not commented. It is not like he gives much away anyway at times. Imagine if you were trying to talk to your friend and they were too occupied with fiddling with the phone ? Like it or not, trainers have an obligation to speak with the press. He might as well do a Stoute and just avoid the press and when he does, look hostile. Still, AOB is one of the more media friendly trainers. Gosden is great but he can be very condescending at times, which can be funny
I don’t think thats really fair Twice Over. It would be different if Aidan was a completely independent trainer, but essentially he is and employee of ‘the lads’ so he has to be available at all times. Not only that but it’s his meticulous attention to detail that has brought him the level of success he’s had, he’s made it no secret how much he values constant communication on every little detail. He always has time for a few words with anyone who approaches him, more so than most, so I think we can forgive him the odd phone call.

Mumbling.
June 3, 2017 at 20:25 #1303368Oh and another embarrassing interview by Chapman with Mark Johnston. I’d have told Chapmant to buzz off.
June 3, 2017 at 20:47 #1303371Well quite. I’m resigned to the fact that the fashion nonsense is a tradition of Royal Ascot but why it is now a feature of every important meeting is a mystery. I suppose we should be grateful for the small mercy of dedicated “fashion commentators” (whoever they were) rather than the embarrassing and, frankly offensive, leering we get when the usual presenting team tries to have a bash (like at Chester).
I don’t think we ever really saw the horses in the paddock did we? We certainly never saw the last of the runners in the parade, which, this year, included the winner!
June 3, 2017 at 20:48 #1303372I didn’t see it myself but Mike says it was nice to see Middleham featured; something that I doubt Ch4 would have done.
June 3, 2017 at 20:56 #1303374Yes the features are generally very good. It’s the live coverage that they need to address
