Luke really is a bit special
As soon as he was all over Queen Kindly knew that was her chances gone..
and what was Spencer doing coming out of the stalls completely pulled her back to a walking start, don’t think she would have beaten the winner but might as well have stayed at home

Spencer totally overdid that. If you are out to find out whether something stays then just ride a normal race and find out one way or the other. Now we are no further on and neither is Fahey in all likelihood. Just a waste of a race.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Virtually the whole programme was dreadful, especially Chapman who I’m surprised wasn’t told by more than one to stfu. There’s a few heads to roll before they even start to show some priority to the viewer. What a self-indulgent bunch whose tips give no indication of their racing knowledge.
April 23, 2017 at 11:10 #1297992They started off really well, but they have been showing less of the horses, thought the Grand National pre race was a bit poor. My main gripe is their constant changing of the titles which means I have missed recording them.
With so much gambling being on other sports and those horrible machines, racing needs to develop a parallel interest from people, and that is focusing on the horses as well; I am personally less interested in the jockeys. More about the horses, more views of them pre race, less interviews with none racing people.April 23, 2017 at 11:29 #1298001Totally agree Crepello and kingbenitch, not having Racing UK or ATR I had nowhere elso to go (unfortunately).
Just looking at the stalls at Newbury, and wanting to see the horses loading up, while the presenters gabbled on in the top right hand corner of the screen was really annoying.I’ll certainly be taking advantage of my Membership at Newmarket and getting to the racetrack as much as I can because there’s little hope of seeing how horses have turned out after their winter break, how they go to post etc by tuning into ITV racing if this is how the rest of the flat season is going to carry on.
Newbury was a top class flat meeting and it deserved better than the second rate coverage it got yesterday.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...April 23, 2017 at 11:38 #1298003I am afraid if you want more of the horses then it is the specialist channels or just accept a situation that isn’t ideal.
I used to enjoy the terrestrial broadcasts dedicated to a single meeting but plenty of those are long gone. The tendency for many years has been to fill time with more races. You cannot easily do both so do the majority of viewers want more races or to watch horses wandering around a paddock?
April 23, 2017 at 12:58 #1298008The off times yesterday didn’t help, having the spring cup just 15mins before the big race didn’t help.
They were at Ayr for the Scottish national but didn’t show a single horse in the paddock beforehand,RUK would have been no help as they had to show a gaff race from Bangor 10mins beforeApril 23, 2017 at 13:01 #1298009<p abp=”247″>I am afraid if you want more of the horses then it is the specialist channels or just accept a situation that isn’t ideal.

I think less sterile twaddle from the team would be a start. I’m no lover of Gleason but he doesn’t deserve being shouted down by Chapman, neither does Chapman’s lingering on with questions to the winning jockey do the image any good. It’s odd that both BBC and ITV were quite successful at providing a racing service covering six or seven races, even providing results from other meetings.
I agree with Crepello that the horses are being largely ignored in favour of the more mundane.
April 23, 2017 at 14:03 #1298014I agree about the twaddle and not seeing the horses but if you want specialist coverage you’ll have to pay and you’ll be sorely disappointed by that too. We’ve had some coverage this week for the first time in a few years and will have to be content with that. Get real, flat racing in particular is a hard sell to the general public.
April 23, 2017 at 16:42 #1298035ITV is worse than C4 ( nothing much wrong with C4 IMO) Sally Ann (terrible presenter and interviewer),Hayley Turner ( nothing to say and no homework)Jason Weaver( dull and cliched) and Matt Chapman (over excited and inappropriate)are all vastly inferior to virtually anyone on the C4 team with the exception of Tanya(amateurish)
As for seeing the horses and summarising their chances …C4 werent great but Cunningham and McGrath used to at least do their homework and although their tips were poor they gave accurate and succinct summaries of most of the horses chances before races and totally knew what they were talking about re form.
The in jokes and teasing of each other by the ITV team is getting arch and annoying and once again there were more genuine laughs on C4 for me.
I’m certainly not enjoying this more than the C4 product and some of the hires are baffling.
April 23, 2017 at 18:00 #1298046I haven’t seen much of RUK, but what I’ve have seen shows little of the horses and they try to cram in as many races as possible on ATR and that, of course, serves it’s purpose. For some reason once more my Tivo box failed to record any of the Craven meeting, I caught a little on ITV hub, but the reception was so poor I didn’t persevere. They did show good coverage of some of the runners in the paddock, but they were so pixalated I couldn’t tell if they had wintered well or not.

Not much to disagree with there, it was but mildly better. Opinion…..McGrath is a smug bugger and Cunningham would be a cert for a boredom award as would most of the ITV team. I agree about Stephenson, devoid of personality.

I was at Newmarket for the 3 days of the Craven and saw every single horse parade in the paddock and pleased to confirm that they all look pretty forward in their coats which were gleaming and the 2yo’s all good size, one or two may have needed the race to bring them on.

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...April 30, 2017 at 05:28 #1298944I don’t think I could have been alone in sensing the distinct unease of Nicky Henderson when being totally embarrassed by Chapman’s inappropriate and disrespectful ‘interviews’ at Sandown on the final day of the NH season.
Chapman’s joy at landing the terrestial gig is there for all to see but he is totally indisciplined and even his colleagues are clearly unsettled by his loose cannon and frankly arrogant input. He’s like a drunk at the party who doesnt know when to shut up or how boorish theyre being and I think this boils down to a line management problem because surely his employers must know that although the excitable puppy routine maybe something new to the way racing has ever been presented on a mainstream channel but they must also realise how demeaning it is to the sport to have its human stars being forced to talk to somebody who has zero journalistic or interviewing skill whose intention is to make everything about themselves.Truly awful and can’t be allowed to continue.

Well I’ve always thought of Chapman as being the worst of the crew but he has some serious competition from other members. Yesterday’s offering was truly a car crash and I can’t believe ITV are just letting it carry on in this way, it has disaster written clear.
April 30, 2017 at 14:34 #1298983The last few weeks has marked the transition between NH and flat racing for ITV, and I’m still blowing hot and cold over this product.
Yesterday, there were moments when I thought that the team really does get NH racing – as per over Menorah’s retirement, Many Clouds as jumps horse of the year, and giving proper air time to the pre-race parade, led by an exuberant Sprinter, and also featuring Sire de Grugy, Cue Card, Willoughby Court, Buveur D’air. That was a really nice touch. This is centring the horse that is at the heart of NH racing. But, set against this, there was still way too much inane ‘yack time’ focused around the presenting podium. Like others, this especially grates for me when horses are circling in the paddock behind for an important race. I really do want to see the runners in the ‘Whitbread’ before they are down at the start. EC says that they are listening to ‘feedback’, so ITV please take note. Even short recorded clips would be better than trying to spot horses milling around at the start.
I think it’s fair to say that the NH community is still feeling its way with how to engage with ITV, but by and large this is working out. Personally, I’ll be watching the Guineas meeting with interest to see how the much more stand-offish and ‘difficult’ flat scene engages (or not) … Aside from JG, Meade and Tabor, there were some painful moments and/or obvious gaps last week (e.g. when Luke Harvey tried to get Roger Charlton to talk re Atty Persse and when Ulysses won but no one was available for comment). Presumably, this will be Francesca Cumani’s role? It looks a tough gig to me, but if the trainers don’t really engage there’s going to be a lot more of this podium banter (Weaver/Turner) and MC to have to endure.
