Mike, it would certainly make a hell of a difference – speaking for myself – if you were back posting regularly. I read everyone who posts here, and it’s been good to see the recent newcomers, a few of whom are excellent judges.
Still, your absence, and Drone’s, has left a pretty big hole imo
November 8, 2015 at 21:06 #1220789I’d like to suggest that all the sub forums are scrapped and everything is on one forum with key threads as stickies, say the next big race due or what have you. Just my opinion, i feel everything is too fragmented and it’s actually diluting interest.
Just a suggestion.
There may be too many sub forums. I think a single one might be even more annoying for some though. I only ever look at the main one, “Big Races”, “Competitions” and “Memorials”.
Going back to the main question – no, it’s a great forum. This thread may well be up for “Thread of the year” as it seems to have brought it back to life during what was always likely to be a quiet time (flat season finished and jumps not really into its stride). Most of us just lurk (myself included). Nice to see many people coming forward. Hope it continues.
November 8, 2015 at 21:13 #1220791It would be good for the forum to see Mike back, no doubt about that. Another thing that would be good is not having to keep pressing refresh to get into the place. And once in having to quite often do the same when going into the sub forums. Maybe my browser(Opera)has some conflict with TRF, but I have no trouble with any other site.
Cormack seems very lax on site maintenance and having one’s name above the door does come with certain responsibilities. If he doesn’t have time to do the job properly then, with respect, it may be time to hand over the reins to someone who has? Just a thought.
November 8, 2015 at 21:14 #1220792I hope not….
To be honest, I’ve had some ‘real life’ stuff which has meant I’ve been unable to spend as much time working on TRF this last ten months or so. I’m going to try over the winter to free up some additional time to livening things up and maybe doing some more promo stuff to attract debate(rs). I have some ideas (and would welcome any more!)
I too have noticed some ‘big’ racing stories go without mention on TRF and, although our traffic still stays pretty high (we’re by miles the biggest UK dedicated horse racing forum in terms of traffic), the engagement seems to have taken a dip, maybe we’re all talked out! I would say that we do have a lot of sections and some of them, like the Big Races section for example, are reasonably active, but the Horse Racing section definitely seems to have come off the bridle this last year or so.
As mentioned, I’d welcome ideas and/or help to assist us inject a little oomph.
David
I love this Forum David and would hate to think of it in it’s death throws which it definitely is not it’s just that time of year when the flat fans (me ) are feeling a bit low now the November Handicap has run and it’s 6 months to the Guineas meeting at Newmarket. National Hunt fans are getting into gear for the season ahead but the days are so short so if you’re going racing you have to be up and out early and it doesn’t give much time to post.
Could I just say that the very first page that greets people visiting TRF for the very first time is completely out of date Galway Preparing for the Dermot Weld Show and Racing Tips from Royal Ascot, no wonder people think we have closed the doors. The very first page should be drawing people into the Forum with some of the topics of the day and the up and coming big races. The Ten to Follow competition for the NH Season run so well by Venture to Cognac with over £300 in prize money could have been highlighted with a link to the Thread. The Competitions Threads are always lively and Bob Rolf does a fantastic job on a Saturday with his 4PP compy so maybe a link to that on the front page may also draw people in. Even my own small compy run each Saturday has small prizes on offer and Nathan’s Cheltenham and Royal Ascot and Breeders Cup competitions could also be highlighted with links when they happen.
I know these things take time and it did take a while for everyone to get used to the new look Forum when it happened but this is the best Forum on the Net with some of the nicest people I have never met. Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...November 8, 2015 at 21:29 #122079811 on a Saturday of a busy, interesting racing day, and this is the first post in Horse Racing. TRF seems to have been steadily dying in the past weeks and months…a real shame.
Its an accurate observation Joe,I have definitely seen less contributions since the forum changeover and I wonder if some just cant be bothered to move with it.I was impressed with the turnout for last years 10 to follow comp that was brilliantly run by VTC and I thought this years would definitely attract less interest as the forum has seen little traffic of late.Surprisingly I’d say we have at least the number of entrants if not more than last year so that is re-assuring.Again that is down to Bob running it.I know from experience that whereas I loved the flat and Jumps equally in the past I now love the jumps way more and that has seen me quieten down during the summer.Thankfully we’ve had Jonibake to carry us this past 6 months as far as giving us a good read with Winners thrown in and anyone who starts a Big race thread is always inviting for those with foresight, now that the Jumps is warming up and the proper season gets under way at Cheltenham this week with Johns Spirit winning the Paddy Power Gold cup at 16/1 we should see things liven up again…Hopefully! TRF has become part of our lives and has given me the chance to meet some interesting characters, including the Ginger one.Lets hope it stays that way.
November 8, 2015 at 23:07 #1220807No problems Joe.

November 8, 2015 at 23:43 #1220812Cormack, have we lost the option to save a post since the change over or am I missing it somewhere? I’ve got a long post I want to put up but don’t want to rush it and the save option was good for coming back to.

“Maybe my browser(Opera)has some conflict with TRF, but I have no trouble with any other site.”
I stopped using Firefox and switched to Opera a couple months ago and I have never had to “refresh” to get pages to load on TRF but, I do have a fast fibre connection.
November 9, 2015 at 13:10 #1220866Nathan, my Gary Lineker type boyish good looks have fooled you. My 62nd. birthday was last Friday.

November 9, 2015 at 13:34 #1220869You could try another “browser” to test the site out for your own peace of mind.
I have used IE, Edge, Firefox, Chrome & Opera and everything is working fine.
