That’s what I thought when I watched a few races this afternoon. What’s the point of half this rubbish? It must just be training in public. I’m starting to think there should only be racing a couple of days a week because most of this crap is an insult.

An insult to who? Not everybody is lucky enough to have the quality horses or the finances of the Smiths/Stewarts etc. There is room in racing for the ‘little guy’ who scrubs along with just a handful of moderate/poor horses, just a case of being restricted to the smaller meetings. I personally have more respect for these grafters. Surely every man can dream.
Sorry if this sounds rubbish to you, I’m not used to saying my piece and need a bit more practice.

Plenipotentiary…you don’t have to watch and you don’t have to bet but live and let live, eh.

Also a very pleasant place to spend an afternoon. National Trust properties, a gorgeous cathedral, music festivals and some great eateries. When I actually find some time to get a life I can’t wait to go to the racecourse itself just for the fish’n’chips!

Southwell is strategically probably the most important track in the country since it offers an awful lot of hitherto failing horses a genuine second chance to succeed at another discipline.

(Too little use is made of it at the other ability end also, as we have the blood here.)

Very much inclined to agree with all of that. I’d love to see some more conditions events, and maybe even a Listed or two, at the Rolleston venue. Any of those British-trained animals that have proven their worth in comparable grade on the French Fibresand of Deauville, Cagnes-Sur-Mer, etc. in recent times would presumably find something to enjoy in such contests.
