Or does anyone else find it irritating and unprofessional when professionals, commentators and pundits on tv, dont have a clue on the horses, jockeys, etc…
I have lost count the number of times John Francome and co. have been talking about a horse, and they call it the wrong name, or claim he is overpriced at 250/1 when he has no chance at all.
Then Jim McGrath today, wrong jockey names, wrong horse names and pronunciation. I am only speaking from my view, if if it were my job then i would try to be as professional as possible and know the horses, jockeys, etc… without sounding like someone who has been thrown in at the deep end.
Might just be me, but we will see.
April 9, 2010 at 13:37 #288883Agree with you entirely Gaz. At one stage yesterday Aussie Jim called the wrong faller – he called a grey horse as a faller when it was actually a bay!
April 9, 2010 at 13:45 #288884I agree completely, this is their job and it shouldnt be a problem to study and be aware of each runner and the basic information on each.
Its like an actor in the west-end remembering all his most famous and memorable scenes and then arsing up the bits he feels arent as important.
April 9, 2010 at 13:49 #288885It’s also their names which they get wrong, and the pronunciation, sometimes a horse who isnt even in the race is called by the commentator.
April 9, 2010 at 13:50 #288886Dream Team:-
Clare Balding – Front man
Steve Mellish – Form
Tanya – Betting Ring
Commentating – Hoiles?Lydia might be a better front man than Clare, but I like to concentrate on the racing, when I’m watching the racing.
edit: Fashion – John Francome
April 9, 2010 at 16:31 #288930Angus Loughran used to be the worst for that and, yes, it does annoy me. These horses give us so much joy the least we can do is pronounce their names properly. Maybe it’s because I spent my childhood reciting the names of the horses mentioned in National Velvet; if I could get it right at the age of 9 surely people that work in the media can do so. It’s all about respect.
April 9, 2010 at 16:44 #288934At last Gaz – someone has said what has been bugging me for years…..repeat offenders include ‘Big Mac’, ‘The Female’, Rishi Persad, Angus ‘Statto’ Loughran and Willie Carson.
April 9, 2010 at 16:45 #288935You would think they would show a professional attitude!!
They don’t and like others it is BLOODY annoying!!I have watched races both on Channel Four,BBC and ATTHERACES where the eventual winner is not mentioned and it has already made ground and hit the front and then they see it and mention it.
I know it must be tricky cos most of us only watch the one or ones we are on but hey they are getting paid for it!!BE PROFESSIONAL!!

I’ve never understood that. I know bugger all about racing compared to these professionals yet I don’t get their bloody names wrong.
April 9, 2010 at 19:49 #289013David Coleman, almost any sporting event he commentated on had errors, hesitations and omissions. I don’t think he ever researched anything, either that or he was somewhat less than bright
