Firstly hello! I’m back after a hiatus, I was fortunate enough to met a lovely lady in August and as a result have decided to knock the gambling on the head! I haven’t watched any jumps racing this season so I’m completely out of it on the racing front and probably will be going forward too….I have missed you all greatly though!
Thought what better way to welcome myself back than with a good old British moan about the weather….Is it just me or has it been particularly grey and miserable for the past 5 or 6 months? I can remember a stretch of maybe 3 days in that time period during which the skies were clear, it was freezing during that point, but clear and lovely. Other than that, there has maybe been one day every couple of weeks (if we’re lucky) that hasn’t been completely swamped in grey, miserable cloud. I know it’s winter, and I know we’re at the tail end of it now, but I feel like in years gone by there hasn’t been this sheer amount of crap, wet, gloomy weather. It just never seems to end, rather soul destroying really when we know, being in this part of the world, that we aren’t guaranteed sunlight even once spring and summer arrive. Is every winter like this? Am I looking back at previous years with rose tinted glasses? I know the seasons are shifting, but I’m pretty sure there were plenty and plenty of clear-skied days in winters past!
All I want to do is play a round of golf without getting muddy shoes and to sit outside at a nice restaurant without the wind blowing my food away. Though with the state of the country I should count myself fortunate that I even have the luxury of having those annoyances.
March 11, 2024 at 17:35 #1684586Welcome back, Ben.
I prefer mild but wet to sunny but freezing- I can’t stand cold weather. As long as we get a good summer, I can endure a miserable winter.
All the best.
March 11, 2024 at 17:40 #1684588Cheers Glad, I too can get behind a dreary winter if it means a beautiful summer as well, just when we aren’t guaranteed that beautiful summer it can get a little soul destroying during these damp days.
I personally prefer cold but clear skies to wet but mild temperatures, at least if it’s cold I can still go out and do things!

March 11, 2024 at 17:49 #1684594This year has been mild and wet last year was ******* freezing
Here’s one to make you laugh…
I was getting in the mood to go to Cheltenham tomorrow after weeks of not feeling up for it. Charged my camera to the brim in anticipation of a barrage of Gaelic Warrior shots, topped the car up with petrol. I go to my lock up where I keep my ticket but what do I find….. Cheltenham 2023 ticket from last year. I’ve looked everywhere but nothing. Reckon I’ve thrown away this years ticket instead of last years.
Been on the website and they don’t replace lost tickets
c’est la vie….

Oh Nathan that is a corker!! I’m assuming you’ve got an email confirming the ticket purchase? Are you going to head there regardless and explain your situation? Seeing as you’re driving I’d advise parking at the far end of the course on a back road and save yourself the £20 (or whatever it is now) extortion fee!
March 11, 2024 at 18:35 #1684603Ticket was from rewards 4 racing. Not sure if I have an email confirmation. I’ll check when I get home as just out now with blind Dave for a few frames of snooker then billiards. Thanks though Ben as I never thought to check that.
I normally get up early to beat the traffic and park in town. I think it’s called st James car park. Do a bit of clothes shopping. Go the races then go to the Thai restaurant after which is opposite the car park then find a pub to watch Arsenal v Porto. By half time or full time I’ll make my way home as the roads will be clearer.
I find it much less stressful than going by train or sitting in non moving traffic

March 11, 2024 at 18:42 #1684606Welcome back, Ben.
The perception for me is there has been a storm every week or two all Winter, but what else do we expect when the Polar ice caps melt and consequently increased global rainfall?
Shape Of Things To Come, sadly.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 11, 2024 at 19:00 #1684614Oh Nathan that sounds like a tremendous day, well if the place you park at is comparatively cheap and close to where you’ll be having a Thai (though not the fun sort) then it makes sense to park where you usually do! Glad to hear you’re still knocking about with Blind Dave!
And Ian those are my thoughts too, despite it being milder than usual this winter it’s felt as though there has been a constant breeze which has made it feel about 5 degrees colder than it is anyway! It’s a first world problem when you look at the state of Gaza right now so I shouldn’t complain too much, but like you said there’s only going to be more of this going forward.

Last I heard on the subject the been 5 or 6 named storms throughout the season, probably more

I thought the was one called Chezza, but it was just hot air.

You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.March 12, 2024 at 03:25 #1684682“Firstly hello! I’m back after a hiatus, I was fortunate enough to met a lovely lady in August and as a result have decided to knock the gambling on the head!”
Hello young Ben.
I met a lovely lady on Sunday but I’m still gambling! Was this Woman’s name “Freda Done.”?(!) Next time you take her out just check its not a wig.
Delighted for you if are in a new relationship. Are you still at the “no, you hang up!” stage? All misty eyed and giggling? Are you going Dutch or are you still wining and dining her?
The samometer of love ❤️ tells me you are at stage one and that’s a good place to be. Stay there as long as you can, but do take her to Newmarket or your nearest flat track next month to test things out and if she really is Freda Done then She’ll really show you a good time and you’ll get in for free! By then you should know Freda well enough to do the Crocodile 🐊 Dundee test….
As for the weather, its only cold in the North Sea I’m outside every day in my Garden uniform of wellies, shorts 🩳 and a Guernsey 🇬🇬. My Mother in law was 82 yesterday and she lives in the Channel Islands and just like any other day she drove down from her house in Torteval to Portelet bay and Swam in the Harbour.
She’s hard core and like me is a keen gardener. I really look up to her and love going over to see her. Off there at the end of the month. And yes I’ll enjoy a swim there as they get the Gulf Stream there and the icy cold clear water of the Atlantic ( next stop America) is infrequently infused with little jets of “warmish” water.
The most important Girl in my life is 16 today!!!
What happened there? I’ll celebrate both my little Girl’s and Mother in law’s birthdays 🎂 today with a swim in the oggin myself.
We are just in the middle of what to me has been the mildest spring in years. Yes it has been rather wet. But like most if not all of my brother gardeners we are very excited about the coming days and months!! We are due a cold snap but the longer march goes on the lighter it gets.
To me, it has been the mildest winter I can remember up to now( ever). I’ve been able to work outside almost every day.
It’s great to hear from you dear Benny Boy and if you are happy mate, alls right with things. ( At least in this part of the world 🌎) 👍.March 13, 2024 at 14:39 #1685402Thankyou for the lovely message Sam!
It’s funny you ask whether I’m still wining and dining her because it’s actually the opposite! Despite being 32 I’m in the second year of a degree and am thus the most skint I’ve been in my adult life! I’m incredibly fortunate that she’s such an understanding woman and honestly the most intelligent person I’ve ever met! She’s generous enough to pay for our dinners/holidays as she studied once upon a time and knows the struggles of being a student, I’ve assured her I will make it up to her when I’m back to working full time, though I doubt I’ll ever earn what she makes being an oral surgeon in the private sector specialising in cancer rehabilitation! I’ve honestly never been happier, she’s super smart, funny and more importantly nice and understanding. She also loves going for a good walk which is a treat in my eyes! We actually went to Cornwall over New Years and spent the entire time dangerously scrambling around places like Boscastle and Bude in 40mph winds, a tad dangerous? yes, fun? definitely. We visited Bruges in November too and spent the entire time stuffing our faces with mussels and chocolates, what an absolutely stunning city that is, would love to go back and couldn’t recommend the place enough for a long weekend! Felt like we were living in a fairy tale.
Your mother in law sounds like an absolute blast, swimming in the harbour is something I doubt I’d be willing to do, especially this time of year despite the jets of “warmish” water! The two of you are certainly braver than I! Very belated happy birthday to both her and your daughter, I can imagine the time has flown by. I too am very much looking forward to seeing the flowers start to blossom, I plan on visiting Kew Gardens some time soon! But have also discovered a very pretty garden in Holland Park, it’s between my girlfriends flat and one of her workplaces so I love walking through there on my way to meeting her and looking at the peacocks, the pond, the little waterfall and the gardens themselves. When the sun is shining it’s a wonderful place to be!
Really glad to hear you’re doing well, I hope your daughter had a great birthday!
March 13, 2024 at 18:47 #1685557Just remembered I uploaded a video earlier that I took the last time I was in Holland Park, ironically it was on one of the few recent sunny days! It’s usually much quieter and secluded than Hyde Park, far less touristy
March 13, 2024 at 18:58 #1685558Love that Japanese garden bit, Ben. Very relaxing up there.
I often go for a walk around Holland Park and then for lunch and a couple of pints at the nearby Windsor Castle pub.
March 13, 2024 at 19:11 #1685559Pleased you like it too Glad! I’m yet to see the flower garden area in full blossom so I can’t wait to check out that part of the park once the flowers are out! Life doesn’t get much better than taking a nice sunny stroll through those areas if you ask me. I’d never heard of the Windsor Castle pub but having just googled it it looks beautiful, old school vibe while still looking clean and fresh! Just looked at the menu too and it looks very appetising, will be tempted to head there for the Sunday roast.
Are you local to the area Glad?
March 13, 2024 at 19:18 #1685561Not local (I live in Surrey), but my best friend used to live in Holland Park and I like to go there whenever I am in town.
March 13, 2024 at 19:38 #1685571Surrey is lovely as well! Lived there for many years. I don’t blame you, much easier walking about West London away from the busy crowds isn’t it.
