It’s a throwaway line at the end of the Leopardstown report in todays Post, but I find the figures astonishing.
"Tote turnover was a record 784,903 euros, helped greatly by the link with the French PMU that resulted in 350,095 euros being bet into the pools. Last year’s turnover was 360,013 euros."
So French punters have doubled the size of the Irish tote pools – which leaves me with several questions. When and how was this link up established? How do French punters know that they can bet on Irish racing and where do they get the info they need, like runners, form etc? Is this a regular thing or a one-off?
And are the UK Tote joining in, or are they as usual, twenty years behind the times?
Ok, the actual amounts aren’t that big, but they seem to indicate considerable potential if this is the first time such a link has been available.

It’s been going on for at least three years here. Not that many punters seem to realise – so poorly run is the old nanny.
The relationship would appear to be one-way traffic at present, with French money making up the majority of the pools in many/most of our group one races. I haven’t seen one instance of our tote exhorting its customer to bet into French pools.

all
races with 16 or more runners, not just handicaps.

Here is a list of the foreign races on which French PMU punters can bet.
February 9, 2010 at 12:28 #275111Major plus for me – I’ve been betting through my Irish Tote account on French racing for a number of months now. Also able to bet on UK racing through a French Tote like betting site too Alan http://www.ziturf.com
Liquidity is poor at the moment but they sponsored a few races at the October Cheltenham meeting so hopefully this will have encouraged more punters to bet with them.
February 9, 2010 at 12:30 #275113There is fantastic potential here if this can be expanded. Imagine the whole of Europe betting on the Scoop 6 or an Irish version at the weekend with a couple of million in the pool- fantastic!
I’ve been telling the Irish Tote here for ages that they need a Scoop 6 type bet perhaps involving 2 Irish meetings either on the same day or Saturday/Sunday.February 9, 2010 at 13:10 #275119For me a big plus with the Irish Tote is they pay out on the first four in

That’s not as grand as it sounds, when in effect all they are doing is robbing Peter to pay Paul. The place dividends are obviously lower for the first/second/third horses to pay out on the fourth.

Similar to firms betting 5 places in big handicaps – how often have you (general TRF posters) bet with a firm due to the 5 places and copped the each-way part of the bet as a result of the horse finishing fifth?
February 9, 2010 at 13:24 #275127At least whatever finishes fifth is in effect an ex-gratia payment from the bookmakers profit on the race, rather than taken from the punters that finished in the first 4.
