I noticed in an interview before the guineas weekend Frankie saying bar riding for coolmore he couldn’t see him winning a classic bar the leger. Is this a sign the gosden aren’t getting the quality they used to. With Henry de Brom head winning at Sandown and only palace pier winning out of I think 10 group ones so far is the flat echoing the jumps in the best horses being in Ireland. Plus the O’Brien’s youngest haven’t even hit form yet.
I noticed also that Alice spring was covered by Dubawi so coolmore trying everything to expand their empire.
Things may change when Galileo retires but they said that after danehill then sadlers well and then Galileo came along. Are the days of Varian,Haggas and the like winning classics over.
I hope not as much as I admire listen himself I’d love to see maybe mark johnston have another mr baileys or attraction.May 29, 2021 at 10:04 #1542567Is Galileo the only Sire in the world who is currently ‘Private’?

May 29, 2021 at 11:24 #1542587A quick scan of the Weatherbys stallions app shows Al Kazeem, Farhh, New Approach, Dutch Art, Parish Hall, Vocalised and quite a few others listed as their fee being private. Also a lot of stallions standing in Japan (notably Duramente, Harbinger, Maurice, Lord Kanaloa, Talismanic, Thunder Snow) are listed as fee on application which comes up under the ‘Private’ fee filter.
It would not surprise me if Galileo turned out to be the most difficult of these to actually get a booking for, because Coolmore obviously have first dibs and they have no shortage of mares to send him, on top of the competition from everyone else who would quite like to breed a Galileo foal one day.
May 29, 2021 at 11:31 #1542588Haven’t done my homework there to be fair. Shamardal is too. But not Kingman, Sea The Stars, Dubawi, or Frankel. Not really sure why that would be.

May 29, 2021 at 11:45 #1542590Back to the topic, I thought over the winter the Gosdens had some beautifully bred 3yos to look forward to, but nothing has really leapt out on the racecourse (and some have been downright disappointing).
I’m not sure if it’s that they’re not getting the quality of horses that others do, or more that the horses they are getting are just needing more time to show their best and therefore not as likely to be ready for the early Classics.
While it was another Irish trainer, it was still very refreshing to see Jim Bolger lifting the Guineas with horses he had bred himself. There’s still a place for the smaller outfits to make their mark.
May 29, 2021 at 12:59 #1542617Gosden has mainly relied on owner/breeders for his very best middle distance performers – Taghrooda, Enable, Golden Horn, Dar Re Mi etc.
That means you need two things to happen to continue your success – a) those outfits continue to breed top class horses and b) the people involved remain alive.
Gosden commented the other day that he was passing on a poisoned chalice to his son, and the recent sad passing of Hamdan Al Maktoum and Khalid Abdulla, he presumably sees as part of that.
Worth re-reading this report on the Anapurna success in the Oaks for the breeding background story:

June 12, 2021 at 10:17 #1545034Jonnie G should have entered one of his handicappers in Derby, who knows he may have won it.
Hey Jonnie G when you retired Enable did you realize then your Group 1 days were over I know ITV Racing missing Enable.
June 12, 2021 at 10:30 #1545036Incredible that Gosden did not have a single runner at Epsom over both days.
