Looking down the handicap for two against the field:

    GUN DIGGER
    – Stable is mob handed as ever! This one hasn’t been fully tested at extreme distances, though was going well enough when coming down at the 18th in the National Hunt Chase. Form looks solid and has the right sort of upwardly mobile profile.

C’EST JERSEY – From the other Irish powerhouse the Mullins stable. Lightly race this season, only the two runs over fences, but a decent hurdler that hints at a lot better over fences.

    My ew 2 are…

Burrows Saint 16s. Sidestepped the grade 1 today to go for this so ought to be ahead of the handicapper.
Shady Operator 16s 5 places. A trends fit as backup for the above selection.

    Good luck all. :good:

Could chop and change all night here, it’s a proper puzzle.

Looking for more to go with Pairofbrowneyes, and it ain’t easy. Long term fan of Any Second Now, but I don’t want him winning this, bearing in mind he’s a serious fancy for Aintree.

From the Elliot yard, I’m juggling Jury Duty, who was a strong fancy for Aintree, and was a shade unlucky, while Shattered Love, potentially, could be thrown in. Gun Digger is another, going very well in the NH Chase, and may have more to offer. I can’t call them, so I’ll side with General Principle, but only as a very strict saver, can’t have him winning at those odds and missing him.

The two I’m going with though are Whisperinthebreeze, and Total Recall, who could be the forgotten horse here.

Whisperinthebreeze was excellent at Leapordstown, and too early to say how he’d have fared at Cheltenham. Top connections, and they’re fresh from turning out Magic of Light so well at Aintree.

As for Total Recall, he ran well last time behind Tout Est Permis, and his run behind Al Boum Photo At Tramore, obviously reads a lot better now. Crucially, those runs were well short of his optimum, and this trip is a lot more like it, not to mention that he’ll love the ground. As I said, forgotten horse, and easy to forget that stellar season last year, and for a horse who romped home in a competitive hurdle at The Dublin Festival, not to mention two very impressive wins in The Munster National, and The Ladbroke Trophy, then I think he looks very fairly treated. Interesting that he swerved Aintree and Cheltenham, and I just wonder if this has been the plan all along.

I would love Pairofbrowneyes to win, went on about him enough, and though I thought that ground concerns were exaggerated before Aintree, he doesn’t want it drying any further. Would be a smashing result for me, but I have to have Total Recall as my #1 for this now.

    Pairofbrowneyes 14’s
    Total Recall 16’s
    Whisperinthebreeze 20’s EW 6 Places

Been trying to decide between Tout Est Permis and Auvergnat but have decided not to have a bet in the race, unusually for me. Having some pretty severe jumps season fatigue now (although the Sandown fixture on Saturday is one of my favourites of the season), can imagine not touching Punchestown much.

    Backed three here:

    Gun Digger E/W 20/1
    Jury Duty E/W 12/1
    Total Recall E/W 16/1

As I’ve said before, I’m a fan of Tout Est Permis. However, I think his weight today will be a bit too much – I’d wished they’d kept him for the Punchestown Gold Cup – but I wouldn’t put anyone off backing him. He’ll probably hose up now!

Anyway, my three against the field are

    Valseur Lido
    Measureofmydreams
    Shady Operator

Bear in mind I back the winner of this race every three years…and I had General Principle last year. Make of that what you will.

I’d decided to back Kimberlite Candy anyway [thinking that Tom Lacey must win a big race one day] and then saw that he was top rated and lowest weight on the W Hill site so that sealed it. Don’t think he has his ground though but 33/1 is my kind of price!

The alarming drift on tout est permis continues as he is 32.0 now

Very strange, makes you think there is something wrong with the horse

Not a race I ever get too invested in, but always like to have a try. Whisperinthebreeze and Snugsborough Benny for a bit of fun.

My pin has come down on three in this

    WHISPERING BREEZE 20/1
    BELLOW MOME 28/1
    ISLEOFHOPENDREAMS 25/1

Not confident but six places had to give it a go

Should be a good race and I had half the field on my shortlist!
    Have gone for
    C’est Jersey 20s
    Acapella Bourgeois 33s

    each way
Both in decent form and have a bit of class; C’est Jersey is running off a featherweight as Katie O’Farrell takes 5lb off and I think she is well worth it. Acapella pinged around on decent ground last time so don’t think he needs a bog; hope he doesn’t lose confidence if he doesn’t get things his own way though.

Shady Operator is very well handicapped to me, great bet even at the 12s available now.

Minella Rocco at 25s & third dart is Dounikos at 50s.
MR could be gone but this is the last chance saloon with him for me. Back-class is there.
Dounikos ran well in the Nash for a long way, even though his form shows that he’s much better going right handed which this is. Good ground will suit also.

Tout est Permis 16/1 and Burrows Saint 7/1 for me. I think the first horse can develop in a grade 1 horse and I just followed the money with Burrows Saint.

I just like Burrows Saint here, and I’m happy that you can get 10-1.
