I would say that the LA/COT running in the Derby was a plan similar to Illinois/Highnury race in the Queens Vase. If COT didnt fire in the derby, then LA was there to pick up the pieces but if COT did fire, then it wasn’t going flat out for the win. Lordan got the shout 3 out in the Derby. Same as Highbury the other week, Lordan knew before the turn in that Moores was on it, so held back Illinois, even if it wasn’t pretty viewing.

    TTM,
LA was not a “pacemaker” (as such) for COT, but fact is he sat second – on the shoulder of the pacemaker – on the pace of a race run at a strong gallop. So whether officially a pacemaker or not, was part of the “pacemaking party”. Today I’d expect LA to be further back. With Euphoric again leading but with Grosvenor Square in the role LA played at Epsom. The Euphrates might be up there too, or possibly dropped out the back, just in case they all go too fast. Although it is possible the pace might drop mid-race in order to try and get AF pulling.

Havlin will be trying to settle AF probably in the centre of the field, but if so will he get in a pocket? If on the outside he could be a bit free. If AF settles he has a great chance, but that is not a given. Then again, not a given LA goes into the stalls. But I’d have thought it more likely LA behaves himself, being only down the road from his house.

They should have dropped AF back to 10F, I would be surprised if they don’t go Juddmonte/Irish Champion/Champion Stakes route now – he cruised up 2F out but simply got outstayed not only by LA but by Sunway and had Matsuri got out a tad bit earlier, he would have got 3rd place.

Winner screams St Leger all day long as all he does is gallop – could even see him as a Cup horse for next year.

Los Angeles reverses it. Had a feeling he might off a stronger pace than Epsom and taking his time more this time.

Im very pro you paid the entry you do as you like, but jesus, the euphrates and euphoric where ridden purely to give LA a seemless run up the rail, moved off it on the bend so there was no chance of anything bar a clear rail run, its upto the other jockeys to stop this of course, but nothing was winning that race with the way it was ran other than LA,

As per most other peoples opinion, why they jocked off CS for havlin now is beyond me, hes a great jockey in his own right, but his post race interview sais everything about why you wouldnt choose him over CS, it simply doesnt mean as much to him, bar the fact CS is a better jockey…

Im a big fan of LA, big fan, but he wasnt the best horse today and i wouldnt be considering him for any other group 1 this season…. He wont be winning them

“They should have dropped AF back to 10F”.

I agree, LD. The Eclipse was the ideal race for him but unfortunately he was not entered.

Panned out exactly as I and most others thought it would. I thought af might be vulnerable in the softer going. What amazes me is yet again the beaten jocks know what’s going to happen, knowing Los Angeles is a very strong stayer and then are surprised to see he stays on to win. Third and 4th jockeys should have been closer at the turn. Might not have changed the result but the chances of them reeling in la were very slim.
I think a few are being hard on the winner. He’s improving and looks the type to improve from 3 to 4. The lads are in quandary now as the king george should be the next logical race but the enigmatic one is pencilled in there. I’d go for an arc trial then the arc where he must go close if it turns up soft.

I disagree CAS unless you can enter horses in hindsight. He deserved another chance at 12f in his own age group and he was 6/4 fav, what price would he have been in the Eclipse? and can still run over 10f now anyway.

I think Ambiente Friendly ran fine, maybe slightly below Epsom, maybe the winner improved to get to his level. he did seem to get outstayed a little bit and plenty will say its franked the Derby form. Its not knocked the Derby form but in another couple of yards the 2-3 from the Derby might have been 3rd and 4th here so its not standout form either. Saying all of that COT won it easily and I don’t think Ambiente Friendly would have been beating him over 10 in the Eclipse.

Regards the Ballydoyle pacemakers. Lovely business if you can afford yourself a 1.9M Guineas pacemaker like Euphoric. Shows off the worst of the sport imo when the big boys flex their financial power like this.

I would be stunned if LA runs over 10F again – even the King George with its relatively short straight wouldn’t be best suited to a big long striding galloper.

A soft ground Arc would be of interest as he has won on very soft ground over 10f as a 2 yr old – they can always supplement him for the St Leger and the fact that he does already have an Irish St Leger entry seems rather telling.

Just a thought but isn’t team tactics a big no no in racing thesedays because I doubt you will see a more obvious example with none of AOB’s other three horses being ridden to achieve their best possible placing (unless that was to be the last three runners home)

O’Brien had no intention of fielding four runners but did so to make the numbers up to eight.

Would have likely been a much more intriguing cat and mouse race had he left them out of the race.

Ryan would likely have had to do his own donkey work with the rest stalking in behind him – and it wouldn’t have been the kind of front running ride where he could go slow and stack them up and then kick off the front as LA doesn’t have that kind of tactical speed.

Is anything “entered” in the St Leger yet?
As far as I can see, Illinois and Highbury’s entries don’t include the Doncaster Leger either.

Anyone want £25 @ 4/1 Los Angeles for the Leger?

What did AOB have to say and how many people did he thank for contributing to another win for the Lads ?
