“Mike you couldn’t even bring yourself to back him today”
That’s right he was around 8-13 I don’t do that in any race.
“let’s be honest on the table of derby winners is he going to be at the top ….or the bottom”
I agree he won’t necessarily be up there if you are comparing other years, but he deserves a bit of credit for today for following up, you were willing to take him on, and he won nevertheless.
June 29, 2025 at 16:59 #1735127Mike – not all Derby winners are equal, some are standout stars that go on to prove themselves at all levels whilst others are consigned to just appearing on the long roll of honour and rather forgotten about.
I don’t think we are dealing with a stellar group of 12F 3 yr old colts this year – had Lambourn put this lot to the sword with bigger and easier winning margins then maybe his performances would be marked up, but he pretty much got a freebie at Epsom and today he was pressed from the word go and quite frankly he made rather heavy weather of beating his rivals. Given that it was a strongly run race, the fact that the first 7 home were covered by 4½L tells me there wasn’t really a standout star in the race.
Only time will tell where he will eventually stack up both against his contemporaries and his elders but I rather suspect that he won’t be a name that will often be talked about as one of the better Derby winners.
He is a good horse but nothing more than that.
June 29, 2025 at 17:11 #1735133Also I think Lambourn would’ve preferred some dig in the ground like he did at Epsom over this trip, when the rain came at Epsom Lambourn halved in price and he was more impressive.

Apart from Charles Darwin in the Norfolk.

Not disagreeing with you. He’s more of a Leger winner than an Arc winner.

I don’t think so.
June 29, 2025 at 18:06 #1735146I think so:
June 29, 2025 at 18:09 #1735147Mike – agreed, Leger was what I immediately thought as it looks tailored made for him – a big relatively flat galloping course with a long straight that they can really wind him up from a long way out on.
That being said, what are the odds that Coolmore look for a chance to win a G1 10F race for him for his stud value – Champion Stakes at Ascot if we get the usual borderline (lets move the race onto the NH course) heavy ground scenario?

I don’t see me putting the price up anywhere in that thread. Can’t remember the last time i backed at SP, wasn’t there.

AOB quoted as saying “he could be a King George horse, he could be an Arc horse”. So they may test his Arc credentials at Ascot first, if not up to it maybe the Leger.
