As some of you will have already noticed, I’m shamelessly asking for the advice of those more knowledgeable than me on the forum (of which there are many) to help compile my Ten to Follow lists this year.

A particular problem area is Irish chasers, as I don’t have much grasp of the form. It is normally a good idea to include a horse who will mop up decent prizes across the Irish sea prior to Chelters – the problem is: which one?

So I ask you this: if you had to nominate one Irish Chaser (or UK based chaser likely to ply his trade in Ireland) to follow this season, who would it be?

    Many thanks in advance!

    Hi Benny

I pondered this long and hard last night and came to the conclusion that I haven’t got a clue!

The races worth considering (IMO) are:

    John Durkan
    Lexus
    Hennessy

with the emphasis on the Hennessy because it’s a bonus race

    and the candidates are

War Of Attrition (is he back?)
    The Listener (on the downgrade?)
Neptune Collonges (Lexus is the target)
Turko (2nd in Irish Hennesssy to Listener but what are plans?)
Mossbank (doesn’t really get 3m & owner has WOA)
Snowy Morning (3rd in Irish Hennessy last year)

I’m going to plump for Neptune Collonges on the basis that the Lexus is his target and he should be able to pick up at least 1 of the 2 races he ran in last season in Jan-08 (Cotswold Chase) & Feb-08 (Country Gentlemans Assoc Chase). He could also pick up one of 2 places in the Gold Cup which could make him very profitable.

An interesting horse is Snowy Morning who will probably take the same route to Aintree as he did last year – via the Irish Hennessy (3rd last year to Listener & Turko) – unlikely to run in anything significant before National Weights are announced but he could pick up the Irish Hennessy and then you would also have a fancied Grand National candidate.

I am pretty sure Mossbank is out for the season…..

    Thanks chaps.

I’d come to the conclusion that NC was the best all round bet.

Whilst we’re at it – novice chasers: which if any are you including?

    My shortlist is:

    Tatenen
    Fiveforthree
    I’msingintheblues
    Nevada Royale
    Beshabar
    I’m so lucky

I’m not going to bother with a novice chaser for the moment – I’ll have a pop at getting the Paddy Power & Hennessy winners and then sub them out for a novice chaser in the transfer window if I’m still there or thereabouts.

    Sounds like a fairish plan.

I like Barbers Shop (if he runs) and Silverburn for the PP, and Big Buck’s / Air Force one for the Hennessy.

    Not very original I know.

Also trying to find room for Cousin Vinny, as he could be outstanding, but don’t normally include a novice hurdler. Thinking about sacrificing a staying hurdler, and putting Inglis Drever in in the transfer window, along with the other obvious sub, Denman.

Jaysus – no transfer window – just a bonus window in Februray

Don’t know what I’ll do now – probably Denman & 1 nov chaser in the bonus window

I’ve a sneaky feeling (call it mug’s intuition!) that Denman might go to Aintree this year for the big one given that he will have been off until the Aon in February.

    You heard it here first!

Big Zeb has good prospects of beating the best of the rest of the Irish chasers at 2m/2½m, imo, but may face stiffer-than-usual opposition from pot-hunters from across the Irish Sea.
