Well done guys with Awtaad, he done it very easy. Happy for Hayes, he was delighted with that and so he should be.
I wouldn’t be writing off Galileo Gold just yet, he still ran a good race. You can see why O’Brien had the four in the field, they seemed at pains to try and keep GG closed in and for me it disturbed his rhythm whereas the winner was able to flow his way around like a butterfly.
I think he’s worth another go in the St James Palace and maybe step him up after that, when the going gets quicker and the different generations clash.
Where now for AFB…? The going was against him today and I was surprised they didn’t pull him out which must mean they were happy enough with him going into the race.My initial thoughts are that O’Brien will probably keep The Gurkha to a mile now otherwise Ballydoyle don’t have a mile colt. St James Palace is most likely next run for The Gurkha whilst Ballydoyle will rely on US Army Ranger for The Derby.
May 22, 2016 at 06:53 #1247964I am a bit puzzled by the race tactics. The boss gave me no instructions, except not to get there too soon, which I did, but I saw Frankie was in trouble on the rail and I wanted to make it as hard as possible for him,” said Hayes, who punched the air in delight as he rocketed to the finishing line. “He’s the best horse I’ve ever ridden.”
It seems to suggest the winner accelerated earlier than planned because this would increase the gap back to Galileo Gold who was caught in traffic. But normally this acceleration would waste energy versus running steadily so maybe the winning time would have been quicker if Awtaad’s pace had been steadier. So the tactic appears irrational. However, it sounds like the winner was better than even the jockey expected so stayed on well despite the acceleration. So it worked out well in the end.
This was a good move and initiative by Hayes. I would have thought it was quite logical if you see your main danger is in trouble and caught in traffic that you make the most of it. For all Hayes knew Galileo Gold could have had a far better turn of foot than him if he had bided his time, he would have looked an absolute mug then.

"this perfect mix of poetry and destruction, this glory of rhythm, power and majesty: the undisputed champion of the world!!!"
May 22, 2016 at 12:46 #1247994I think they will be some serious haed scratching going on at Coolmore regarding AFB !!
He does like he hasn’t trained on but if that is the case then wouldn’t they have known this from his work??
Admittedly I backed the winner but he does like a serious racehorse!!
May 22, 2016 at 21:24 #1248028Haha yes well said. Its to keep the Galileo Gold hype going into the next race, where he’ll finish 9th. Its all a load of rubbish, the same old crap they spout everywhere really. I cant stand the racing post et al. They talk more nonsense than anything else. Keep an eye on Massaat.
