The "hound" will get another chance in the Japan Cup. He will get his ground and his fast pace. He will no doubt be perfectly prepared, and he will no doubt finish in midfield as he did last year.
And will any of the Japanese who beat him be given a rating anywhere near the one he’s allegedly earned?
You know how it is with handicappers. They rate largely according to the name of the race; and if results prove their previous assessments incorrect, they just say the horse never produced the same form again.November 10, 2008 at 05:04 #189020AnonymousInactive- Total Posts 17716
Glad to hear that he’s running again, Zorro.
A tenner says he finishes closer than last year?November 10, 2008 at 13:23 #189028OK reet hard. If you think you’re hard enough
November 10, 2008 at 14:43 #189032Opinions are just opinions, unless supported by some corroboration.
Ratings are also just ratings, until they take circumstances achieved in into consideration.
Papal Bull has a near-perfect record on fast ground, his only 2 blips coming when badly hampered in the Derby and in a Jockey Club Stakes run at a crawl.Reet, I don’t see how you can rate a horse better than others when it needs absolute perfect conditions to perform to a level that others achieve regularly.
Personally I think most of these ratings are way off the mark.
I also now think The Duke is over rated… You can argue that he had a hard season but then so did the 3yo’s who subsequently stuffed him in the classic.

Aragorn
Maybe we’ll see, when Zorro’s tenner is winging its way toward my pocket?
November 10, 2008 at 20:25 #189075You should have asked for odds imo
I just hope it’s not a full moon…

You are more than entitled to your view, but I find it bizarre that you suggest the Classic was a fair reflection of DOM’s ability. Your point about him being stuffed by a "three year old" in the Classic suggests he was beaten by just one horse…instead he was beaten by 8 horses including a 66/1 outsider. Duke Of Marmalade was given a rating of 116 for that race….you would imagine a run like that would clearly point to the horse running below form as he did in the Arc. The horse also returned from the States with a kidney infection while Soldier Of Fortune came back with a respiratory infection.
November 10, 2008 at 21:15 #189080Duke Of Marmalade was a very good horse. He wasn’t as good at twelve furlongs but at ten furlongs he was top notch. Whether he would’ve beaten the New Approach that won the Champion stakes I very much doubt and it could be argued that his ten furlong competition wasn’t the strongest but you can do no more than beat what is in front of you.
I don’t think he was a legend of a horse but he was a very good one.

Again I have no problem with that, but the idea that his Arc or Classic run provided a reliable guide to his form is pretty unfair to the horse when he clearly was not himself.
