Wow – that was a shock re Vaughan.
I hope he comes back as he is a class player and a brilliant captain.
I do not see how Key has any chance, considering he is not even in the eng squad…though that could change!
I agree with cook, though I have no probs with Strauss either.
I do not think Flintoff or KP are the right personalities for the job. However, KP prob deserves a chance to prove me and any other doubters wrong.
Everyone deserves their chance if the earn it.

August 4, 2008 at 10:14 #176007I am unsure about KP as captain, but it is not always easy to judge how certain players will cope with the job in advance. You really have to be working with them close up to appreciate that. There might be more to him than we have seen
Difficult to appoint a captain from outside the dressing room, but Key would have made sense to me. Hes a very popular player (big mates with freddie as well) but also a shrewd captain for Kent and one who has seemingly grown into the job. Not only that, hes a quality batsman with a superb eye
J Agnew rather snidely alluded to the fact that KP would not be a popular choice within the dressing room, but then again, nor was G Smith….
August 4, 2008 at 11:04 #176023I like Key as a person, he is a better batsman than he was when last in the team and there is certainly a need for a dominant opener/top three player. He is laid back enough to get on with most people and is pretty sharp tactically.
But nevertheless it remains a huge task to both reestablish yourself in the team and exercise authority from day one. Smith is a different character, very strong-minded and the early days of his captaincy were far from smooth. I’ve got my doubts about whether Key could do it.
Then again, looking at the available candidates, they all represent a gamble of sorts. I certainly don’t think KP would be the disaster that Flintoff was. Though he has enormous confidence in his own ability, he isn’t as domineering as Smith, he will back his own instincts but is quite thoughtful about the game. I just wonder about the long term effects on his batting.
I still think Strauss is the best captain. Alastair Cook is an outside possibility, but I don’t know enough about him. Has he ever captained anyone before?
August 4, 2008 at 12:10 #176035Personally, I think they’d be nuts to make KP captain.

it gets worse…..

August 4, 2008 at 21:35 #176103Good luck to KP
i wonder if Vaughan would of stepped down if England had lost the series but he made some useful runs or if he had not hit any runs but England had drawn/won the series.
The combination of no runs and losing the series plus fielding at Lords for three consecutive days when England should of won that 1st test then the Pattinson thing it’s been a bit hellish time for Vaughan.

August 7, 2008 at 21:13 #176386Didn’t catch any of the today’s play but trust England to start dominating after the series is done and dusted.

August 10, 2008 at 21:38 #176673The splendid AB de Villiers topped the averages and runs scored with 384 runs at 64.00. Smith was second with 369 at 61.50.
August 10, 2008 at 21:44 #176674Thanks Andrew, i knew it was close.
well done on your backing of de Villiers very shrewed.

August 10, 2008 at 22:06 #176677He left it a little late though. To be honest, I thought he would be more entertaining than he has been. He’s a quality batsman. Perhaps batting down at six doesn’t suit him.
August 10, 2008 at 22:31 #176681Yes, great, well done De Villiers – I DON’T THINK!!

Personally, I will always loathe him. Why?
My £1 L15 – K Pietersen 13/5 G Smith 11/4 J Anderson 7/2 M Morkel 4/1.
£3 Patent on KP, Smith and Andersen.
Jimmy is top wicket taker, and KP is 80 runs ahead of Bell with 197 needed for England to win.
Morkel is 3 wickets ahead of Ntini.
So thanks to DE VILLIERS, WHO I LOATHE, I am going to "lose" £1000.

All because of that little 97 he just scored – he beat Smith by 15 runs!!!!!!

I may, if Morkel gets through, pick up £200 ish, but this result has left a bitter taste, Evil twist of events.

August 11, 2008 at 07:24 #176694Frankly, if you’ve backed Anderson for top wicket taker, you’ve already had your share of good fortune.
August 11, 2008 at 21:50 #176752It was that pillock Anderson who trapped Smith lbw for a duck, i sort of knew then that someone was going to finish ahead of Smith.
Zip £200 isn’t bad for a £1 lucky15 keep your chin up.

August 12, 2008 at 00:22 #176760Hi Guys,
Fair comments. Glad someone won.
Great shame about Smith, Nathan – he just looked knackered when he batted 2nd innings; Jimmy also worked him out and has perhaps exposed a flaw in his technique aginst the inswinger.
Andrew – As for Andersen, yes, perhaps I was lucky, and that Steyn was injured – but one needs luck in these bets. I’m sure we could all recount episodes where one selection has let us down for a decent wedge.
However…..and this is probably going to be difficult to believe…
A seriously strange chain of events took place when I picked up my L15 and Patent. I’m not going into too much detail, but the end result was that the girl paid me on Smith to top bat for SA in the 4th test 1st innings and KP to do the same for Eng – These results were on her monitor and she did not realise that I had backed them both for the SERIES.
She then rang their internal betting centre to confirm top bowler for either side, which I had – just! (Ntini almost screwing me over, Morkel having not taken a wicket in the match
)So I got paid for 4 winners in my L15 & the 3 in my patent.
Frankly, I took it and ran. (I really don’t want to open up a moral debate about that, though judge me if you so wish.)
Bottom line is, having sweated and been really pissed that I had been beaten on the line I just feel very lucky.
Anyways, I thought I’d give you the lowdwon…I’ve enjoyed chatting about the cricket with you.
Much happier Zippy
Though prob a very unethical scumbag!Zip
