I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – one of the best NH performers in the last 20 years.
Sadly, he’s also one of the most under-appreciated horses in training.
January 26, 2008 at 16:22 #137904I couldn’t agree more bosra, I wonder every time he runs, what has this horse got to do to go off at odds on; and yet I never back him!
He’s beaten everything wheeled out in front of him, time and again; it’s about time we saluted him.January 26, 2008 at 16:31 #137907A cracking performance today, a clash between him and Baracouda at their peak would have been a great thing to see, their styles really couldn;t be more chalk and cheese. Only injury can prevent a threepeat surely.
January 26, 2008 at 16:38 #137909Superb performance again from this lovely horse…., has to be one the best stayers over the last 20 years…..
January 26, 2008 at 17:21 #137918Brilliant horse, fantastic guts and determination too.
Didn’t seem to be travelling very well at all about 2/3 through the race and i actually uttered the words "the Drever seems to be struggling", he soon put paid to that, battled on up the hill brilliantly.
January 26, 2008 at 17:28 #137920The change of speed he showed rounding the turn was phemonenal, and Blazing Bailey had absolutely no chance thereafter.
I’ve been a huge fan of Inglis Drever ever since I joined TRF – I was never shy in saying just how good I thought he was, though I spent a lot of time fighting his corner in terms of a crack at the Champion Hurdle (which I still maintain he could have won) – and it’s nice to see such an enigmatic ‘character’ carrying all before them, and in some style.
I assume he’s now odds-on for the Festival?
January 26, 2008 at 17:40 #137923He certainly wouldn’t be disgraced in this years CH!!
I’ve already got my Thursday ticket for the Festival. Hoping to see ID storm up his favourite hill and collect his third WH. Would have to be the greatest hurdling talent since Istabraq.
January 26, 2008 at 20:15 #137951I’ve got to go along with the concensus so far, probably the best stayer over the smaller obstacles I’ve seen. I had a pretty big bet by my standards on him today, and he was never in any danger (assuming you’re prepared for his trademark flat spot that is!).
TBH, I think it may be this particular quirk that keeps people underestimating him. He never cruises all the way round and makes it look easy, thus many won’t get very excited about him winning in such a manner opposed to, say, the aforementioned Baracouda and his (often overly) nonchalent style.January 26, 2008 at 21:18 #137974Drever is a machine. It hasn’t failed to amaze me that over the past few seasons, and even this season, there are still plenty of people about who are willing to knock him and underrate him.
I agree with Friggo in that people probably underestimate him as he does hit a flat spot but his tenacity, genuine nature and willingness to fight allayed with his undoubted talent see him through every time. FWIW, I feel that, although not the undoubted champion in his sphere that Drever is, Voy Por Ustedes is under-rated by many for similar reasons.
When Drever wins his third Stayers’ I will be there screaming him home, cheering him in the winner’s enclosure and on his way to adding his name to that of the hall of fame of the truly great champions to grace Cheltenham’s turf.

Couldn’t agree more, Voy Por is massively under-rated in my opinion.
January 27, 2008 at 14:07 #138140The Drever’s been my fave horse for some time now , must of backed it everytime in the last few years and the bookies keep giving me odds against – mugs!! keep forgettin to check the in-running betting out as the flat spot someone mentioned before occurs everytime he races – without fail hes always scrubbed along with about a mile left then comes alongside the leader on the bridle.
definately the best staying hurdler ive ever seen , however i have only been watching racing for the last ten years , better than Barracouda – all day long!!January 27, 2008 at 17:44 #138192After timing I know, but looking at the race beforehand, I decided that this was a penalty kick for ID. However being the crazy fool I am I thought, "I don’t back anything at less than 2/1".
Thank god for in-running betting! Got my 2/1. And he won like a champion.
January 27, 2008 at 19:21 #138217That was the sort of run that’s a pure joy to watch. Awe inspiring, I was so pleased.
January 27, 2008 at 19:36 #138222I wonder every time he runs, what has this horse got to do to go off at odds on
He’s beaten everything wheeled out in front of him, time and again; it’s about time we saluted him.Agreed, remarkably he touched 3.1 on Betfair yesterday
His two odds-against wins this season are reminiscent of the great (and I use that word advisedly) Baracouda being allowed off odds-against in two of his Stayers’ Hurdle victories: the market made for them by woefully overbet second favs who though admirable horses in their own right (Blazing Bailey, Special Envoy, Bannow Bay, Limestone Lad) didn’t actually have anything like the chance their odds suggested if ID and B simply ran upto to form, which they did.
Inglis Drever has been a joy to watch throughout his career; his running style is entertaining; his attitude once rousted superb; and he must be a thrilling if challenging ride. All epitomised by the way he attacked the final hurdle yesterday.
That both he and Baracouda have not taken their rightful place in the racing public’s heart, despite being top-class, is perhaps because staying hurdlers are something of a cinderella division with both relatively few participants and few ‘graded’ races.
Or maybe because they’re trained by a farmer from County Durham and Johnny Foreigner.
January 27, 2008 at 19:44 #138226May I suggest that the other jockeys adopt a snail’s pace at Cheltenham during the world hurdle. The only way to defeat this gutsy little battler perhaps ?
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
January 27, 2008 at 19:45 #138229I found that amazing on Saturday when I was posting my selecetions on Bob Rolf I immediatly put Aigle D’or and Inglis Dever in the reserve section as I thought they would both be odds on.
Perhaps Aigle D’or was the price he was because Henderson other horse had just been stuffed but how ID started at 11/8 I will never know.
I never even bothered with ID’s race and just presumed he would win easily.
Must have been a lot of very happy stay at home punters who had him in doubles and trebles.
January 27, 2008 at 19:58 #138236It is difficult to see an alternative to ID for the World Hurdle at the mo…
His attitude is most admirable.
