If Jamie is available to ride one of ours I’ll book him every day of the week and twice on Sundays. From an owner’s point of view his greatest quality is his ability to get a horse to settle. More horses lose races through a failure to settle than anything else and that skill alone is worth its weight in gold. His feedback after a race is also intelligent and constructive which helps in considering future running plans for a horse.

Perhaps Bolger should book him for New Approach?!

I think Colin has this spot on , Jamie is low on confidence, but he is very talented , so he will be back , right now he could not win a raffle even if he had all the tickets

Mind you I hope he has a rethink , as you just cant ride EVERY HORSe from off the pace

    cheers

I know an owner who refuses to book Spencer after a not riding to orders..

He’s an O.K jockey but nothing more.

Lovely show-boating performance by Jamie on Ainama in the last at Chester yesterday.

Win or lose, showboating should be met with a fine, just my opinion, of course.

What end does it serve, rather insulting to handicappers, if the jock thinks that anyone is going to be taken in by it!

After just watching the reply of J.Spencer on Ainama yesterday, I’ll retract my comment about him being short on confidence.

Although I do still feel confidence (& the confidence & support of his employers) is the key to riding horses using hold-up tactics.

Anyone who insults Spencer’s ability by telling him how to ride doesn’t deserve his services. I’ve stood in the parade ring with my trainer and numerous jockeys and he frequently gives instructions. When Spencer rides he never does as he knows that Spencer will give the horse the ride it needs as the race unfolds.

Do you really think he was trying to con the handicapper seabird? Personally I don’t think it would have been on his mind.
An interesting one though, will some horses get confidence from coasting past rivals on the bridle rather than being pushed, kicked and whipped to the line? The horse may benefit from thinking to itself, it’s not too bad after all this racing game. How many horses have been soured by having too hard a time?
I think where the problems can sometime come is when a jockey of lesser ability tries it although this is never going to be a problem with a jockey of Spencer’s calibre, if I’d backed that horse I would never have had a moments worry.
As has been said is ability to settle a horse is second to none and this should never be underestimated, how many times have you heard "pulled too hard" or "wouldn’t settle" as excuses?
Barshiba is a good example yesterday, who knows what would have been the result if the jockey had managed to get it settled.

I’m not suggesting that he should have kicked and whipped the horse, Yeats.

Just pushed out with hands and heels.

"Do you really think he was trying to con the handicapper seabird? Personally I don’t think it would have been on his mind."

I don’t know and can’t think what might have been his motive, Yeats. I just don’t see the point!

Would the horse have thought any less of the racing game if he had just been pushed out?

In my opinion, it is just showing-off and we know what we like to see happen to show-offs, don’t we?!

Alright you two – let’s disagree amicably please.

On Spencer – I think he’s a talented jockey but he can come across as over-thoughtful in both his demeanour and in his riding style. I think that, on balance, the majority of day to day punters are inclined to forgive a ‘grafter’ getting beat rather than a ‘thinker’. That said, there is no doubt in my mind he’s a fine jockey.

He’s Premiership class but perhaps more an Everton or Villa than Man Utd or Chelsea.

A more unjustified and preposterous thread I am yet to come across on here.

This is the bit I cant understand Foxy , whats so bad about this thread apart from folks having a different opinion to yours

I mean imagine the temerity about anyone daring to disagree

so maybe a rethink is on the cards

this sport of ours is mostly based on opinions , lets be more welcoming to those at variance with yours

    thanks

I think we should have a new section on the TRFcalled the Betfair Forum. Exclusively for condemning a jockey for losing a race and giving praise for a good ride when winning. Mind numbing drivel.

Interesting how this thread died a death after Lovelace won a Grp2 with him on board….

    Welcome to TRF Johncoffee.

JS has been favourite 118 times this year, winning 39. 33.1%.
I give him a wide berth – but his stats are spot-on for winning favourites.
