…that is if you want to watch the racing. So much building has been going on inside the track, around the parade ring, that it’s like a mini Bejiing. What with new weighing room, saddling boxes, champagne bars and hospitality tents, only those in the Private Boxes will actually be able to see the racing around the complete circuit. For the other poor mugs who pay the extortionate entrance fee, they’ll see as much of the horses racing as they would at Cartmel on a foggy day.
This is such a shame and stands as a symbol of how Chester Race Company (and horse racing in general) has sold its soul to the corporate crew.
The Roodeye is a natural arena and was always a great place for the average Joe to get a good view of all the action. It was a blessed place for the spectator (unlike say, Newmarket). Not any more.
Those below the top level in the stands can expect to see 5 or 6 green portaloos instead of the runners 6+ furlongs out. Beyond that, you’ll be looking at the tops of tents and fancy constructions under which will lurk few real racing enthusiasts.
Chester is now an overpriced booze and birds parlour that just happens to have horses running around it every 30 mins or so.
True, it’s a great (perhaps the greatest) track in the UK for totty. Some of the champagne addled wenches will be in outfits so skimpy they’ll make the Aintree lasses look like Anne Widdicombe.
But – if all you wanted to do is watch the blo0!y horses – then stay at home and watch them on the box.

I always go to Chester and it’s true; the viewing, for race-watchers, has got worse, year by year.

In fact, I’m thinking of watching from the old walls by that bridge!

I suppose I’ll be in Tatts as usual, all the same.

    What a sucker!

Was gutted I never went to see Authorized win last years Dante (I was a fan of his since 06 and it was his target since the Racing Post Trophy so there were absolutely no excuses, with me being just nrth of york) and with this years race possibly due to feature Twice Over, McCartney and my wee anteposter Kingdom Of Naples, Ive got to go there.

Chester’s a bit more of a trip but always watch it on TV and wish I was there, plus Ive done well on it the last two seasons so figure I may go this year.

Ive a mate I work with who lives in hamilton so that would probably be a cheap and cheerful meeting to go to.
