Baaeed has already done enough to be considered a great horse and has the all important 10 furlong Group 1 win.
I see no downside to running him in the Arc. Why should getting beaten in it matter so much? Unless the ground is desperate, I see nothing to trouble him.
He would probably still win it on heavy anyway. I am not saying he was as good as Frankel but Cecil’s great horse won the Champion Stakes on heavy ground beating a proven Group 1 mudlark. Baaeed’s greatly superior ability to his rivals would still make him very difficult to beat even on bad ground.
Racing is meant to be a sport, not just a business.
August 27, 2022 at 11:39 #1612613I totally agree – and as stated I’d like to see Baaeed run in the Arc – but all the recent historical evidence suggests to me that, at the top end at least, racing IS a business, not a sport, whether we like it or not, and money matters evens to the mega wealthy.
In theory, Frankel could have run in the Arc and raced on at five (Henry Cecil wanted him to) but in the end he did neither even though his owner surely didn’t actually need the money.
Ditto here, I suspect.

I am afraid so. But this is where racing runs the risk of becoming a bit boring.
We already have a dull jumps season where all the best horses avoid each other or run in uncompetitive events. They even avoid each other at The Meeting That Matters.
Now we have the best horse since 2012 almost certainly avoiding running in Europe’s premier race for no particularly good reason, leaving us to watch a second rate race instead.
Maybe people who have money have a different mindset but the no risk attitude is disappointing for sports fans. It is rather like golfers who have millions in the bank safely aiming at the middle of the green rather than taking on a difficult flag. What are they frightened of?
August 27, 2022 at 23:41 #1612693Baaeed has been great. Frankel was a great. Sea The Stars was a great. Frankel wouldn’t have stayed 12f so there was no point going to the Arc. Sea The Stars they knew he’d get 12f. I’m not sure about Baeed over 12f, he’s only just gone up to 10f, i would stick to the original plan if i was them and go to Ascot.
August 28, 2022 at 09:01 #1612702I’m intrigued that this debate is very much around the horse running in either the Arc or the Champion Stakes. Why not both? It’s not as if he has to be saved for some future effort, nor is it unusual for horses to run in both races.
We don’t have to go back very far to find an example, as Sealiway won the Champion last year after finishing fifth in the Arc. And just from memory I can recall the likes of In The Groove, Pilsudski and Pride also winning the Champion two weeks after appearing in the Arc.
August 28, 2022 at 09:37 #1612703Well, there’s no actual reason why he can’t run in the Irish Champion, the Arc and the Champion – all three! – and back in the day Group 1 horses would have that sort of campaign.
But we live in a “different” – as opposed to “better” – era now so such suggestions are probably considered futile by many.

I’m sure the owners will have plenty of input anyway and in the end they will decide.
The 2 Champions seem the sensible and logical option and what I would do.August 28, 2022 at 13:25 #1612714Breaking….Baaeed won’t go to Ireland and may well got for the Arc IF the ground is deemed in his favour come the day. If not, he will go to Ascot.
Baaeed is 4/6 with a run with Paddy Power and this pleases my-even-smugger-than-usual-self no end as I’ve got 5/4 with a run.
Baaeed will only run if he gets his ground, ground that not only suits him but will be against some of his rivals, notably last year’s winner.
I don’t see how Baaeed could even be odds-against on the Pari-Mutuel granted these conditions – Longchamp will be swarming with Brits and even the French can read a formbook.
